Let’s talk about Korean grapes…

Today was my first full day at school at Sangmu Elementary. It really wasn’t that eventful, but it was nice to have somewhere to go and something to do today. My co-teacher spared me from leading a class on my first day, so I just did lesson planning from about 8:30am until 3:00pm (with a break for lunch, which wasn’t all that bad). At 3:00 we had a teachers meeting and I introduced myself. I’m not sure if they are lying to me or not but many Koreans have said my pronunciation of Korean is good! YAY! Thanks K-Dramas J. Now it’s almost time for me to go home and I have already planned my introduction powerpoint/quiz for tomorrow as well as my first two actual lessons. Also, I planned what game I will do at my other school on Wednesday.

So, Korean grapes: after lunch, me and the three teachers in my office came back and had coffee and grapes. Thank goodness I am first observant in all things. The first thing I noticed is that they put a second plate down. There was the plate of grapes, then the empty plate next to it. My thought was: okay, so they must have seeds. They told me to go ahead and have one first and then they proceeded to take a grape. As soon as I am about to put the grape in my mouth, I look around at all of them and yes, they are sucking the insides of their grapes out and putting the skin on the empty plate.

What do you do in a foreign country when everyone around you is sucking their grapes? You suck your grapes too.

They were actually really good and the weird sucking the insides out like a vampire thing wasn’t really that weird. I eventually explained that in the US we eat the skin, maybe it’s a different grape (pretty sure it is) and they said that some people here still eat the skin too. But the skin is much thicker… think Pumb-ish.

So yep, summary of my day was that I learned how to eat Korean grapes. Definitely learning something new every day here… even if the lessons vary in value and importance. (Also for lunch our mangos were kind of frozen… I asked. It’s because they are imported.)

Booked!

I've just booked my daughters flights to North America. We leave in 4 weeks. Isn't that insane?! I had to book her separately as I'm a Scentsy consultant and earned the Incentive Trip this year so I'm flying FOR FREE but I'm waiting on the travel agency to book my ticket. I never imagined I could have earned an all-expenses paid trip to the USA and got it 7 months after joining. Crazy! Anyways.....we're excited to be going home for a visit, to see friends and family in Canada, Disneyland, hopefully the San Diego Zoo this time too.
