Review: Pecos

Overview: A tale of a legendary cowboy outlaw and his gross, often sexual adventures.

Pros: The book is very funny, with lots of amusing takes on fairly well known cowboy tropes.

Cons: The concept doesn't feel complete, almost like they went with their first ideas.

Good for: Fans of kind of gross cowboy parodies.

Review: Bird Witch

Overview: A young witch meets a tengu and they quickly become friends and have all sorts of magical adventures.

Pros: Kat Leyh's art is beautiful. Her Miyazaki influence is really clear, the book feels like everything an all-ages book should be. An immersive and imaginative world with plenty of room to expand in the future.

Cons: The book collects the three part Bird Witch story, as well as a few shorter ones - I ended up wanting more.

Good for: Pretty much everyone.

Interview: Kevin Budnik, "Old Gum Wrappers and Grocery Lists" - Comics on Kickstarter

Kickstarter can be an excellent way to self-fund your project. As often as I can, I’m going to bring you short interviews with people using Kickstarter to get their work out there for the world to see.

Today, I bring you Kevin Budnik, speaking about his project Old Gum Wrappers and Grocery Lists.

Interview below.

What is your project?

My book is called Old Gum Wrappers and Grocery Lists. It's a collection of journal comics that I drew between October and July of this year (2014). I serialize most of my work on my site, so the internet has seen this work, but I draw most of my comics with the intention to one day print them. My Kickstarter is a chance to see a physical product of everything I recorded in my journals this year.

What inspired this?

Old Gum Wrappers was sort of a return to journaling for me, after a few months of aimlessness. I had left one job, and was feeling like it was time for me to grow up. Also, I had no idea what that means, and still don't. I needed an outlet for the quarterlife anxiety I was feeling. That's what I love about autobio, it's a huge part of my therapy. 

Why do you love comics?

Well, making them is how I deal with my frustrations, emotions, anxieties, and general feelings of inadequacy compared to the rest of society. However, there's a whole side of comics that I find incredible comfortable. Cartoonists and comics makers are this weird awkward family of people who might seem gruff or hard to talk to, but are insanely accepting for the most part. I've never felt more loved than being in a room full of people who make comics.

What do you think is the future of comics?

Comics in general? That's hard to say. I think it's cool what's happening in creator-owned properties getting picked up by publishers and sold alongside mainstream titles. I'm pretty open about my love of Boom! as a publisher. They cherry pick really great artists, and utilize social media for righteous reasons in doing so.

If you could create anything, what would it be?

A time machine

Bonus question: What is your favorite David Bowie song?

My favorite David Bowie song is Life on Mars. It sounds so bittersweet to me, and I like the adjective "mousy" to describe someone's hair.
