The mouth-watering scent of lamb chops infested the compact household, covering every single inch with the possibility of two children waking up from their slumber.
Sharing the same bedroom and, of course, the double twin bed that was coated in numerous grizzly bear pelts that warmed them up. Fredas slightly laid to the right, already deep inside a dream, smothering themselves in their blankets while cuddling onto a pillow; needless to say, they were mindlessly gnawing on it.
Yette was merely at the left next to her blood sibling, sleeping soundlessly without lifting a single finger, usually taking a minute to yawn and settle herself back to sleep. Unlike the mischievous Fredas, she’s a light sleeper who’ll spend her time after waking up to spend her time being troublesome with her best friend who’d never stop resting for countless hours off the clock.
The monster child stretched her limbs, eyelids soaring off in seconds once she heard Furcifer heed their names.
“Fredas! Yette!”
She lifted herself off the hay-stuffed mattress, searching around before gazing at her younger human friend. Yette wiped the warm tears that rolled down her smooth cheeks, jumping onto the wooden floor, paw pads touching it quietly.
Wasting time waking up Fredas wouldn’t be wise, she thought to herself, dashing out the bedroom while heading downstairs, they have all the time in the entire world to rest; almost everyone in the village has to prepare for the Lunar Festival that’ll happen in the Great Forest.
The Great Forest expanded across the distant continent, having well-secluded villages either underground or within the tree-tops, guardians; both monsters and humans to search for troublesome folk such as thieves and rouges, and also mythical creatures that are unseen and still being discovered to this very day. In the clean eye of the forest, there laid numerous rivers that poured from countless oceans and into a crescent shaped lake. That’s where the Lunar Festival’s usually held, unless if some catastrophe happened like a flood.
Fortunately, Yette secretly began teaching Fredas magic, where they laid inside the soothing element of water. They had issues learning arcane, as reading runes would make them struggle pronouncing every sign that represented multitudes of spells. That’s okay though! Because Fredas can expand upon their skills as they get older and someday, prevent any kind of disasters from occurring.
The young boss monster ran down to the middle of the wooden stairwell, shouting into the kitchen with a booming loud voice, “Yeah, Fur!?” She bit her lips with both fangs, expecting an answer.
Momentarily, the clanks of pans beating each other and spoons roughly touching cups emitted from below, a response put together by the skilled cook, “WAKE UP FREDAS FOR ME, WILL YE?” His head poked through the kitchen doorway, face covered in ash and dust, must be from Belial’s workplace. Yette always knew how dirty that area was, fire magic fueled the charcoal that laid inside the fireplace, where weapons were created and heated into their full strength, but after that process, they get hammered into shape and cooled by a water well inside before actual use.
Fredas’ mother was a well-respected weapon smith, she remarked, nobody could create better tools for the village’s hunting patrol other than her.
She nodded, yelling back, “Got it!” Yette started ascending back upstairs, padding inside their room and hopping onto the bed. Time to create a huge racket for Fredas to start engaging into their harsh reality of living with a boss monster like her.
“Heeeey! Hey!”, Yette roughly shook her friend’s chubby arm, as they rolled onto their back soon later, saliva drooling down their mouth. Ugh, even the pillow’s soaked in human drool. Mental note, let’s not have Fredas chew on her ears again while asleep, who knew what’d happen? Despite all this endless disturbance, they still laid resting during these last 4 minutes. Until, she’s had a quick realization. Why didn’t she do that before?
Yette crawled onto the sheets, lowering her head while taking a finger to lift a few hair strands off, revealing their bare ears. Giggling, she deeply breathed in and gathered most of her energy to roar into their eardrums, “FREDAS!”
Immediately, they shot awake, clearly showing their shock with a gaping jaw. They were stunned, but, that’d be over.... about right now, since Fredas grabbed Yette’s shoulders, shaking her wildly, “What were you doing??? I was in the middle of a good dream!” Tears rolled down their blushed cheeks while they pouted.
“How nice of a dream was it?”
They responded, confirming Yette’s predictions, “I was about to chow down this big ol’ chunk of honey and---”
Grabbing Fredas’ hand, she tugged them down from their bed sheets, rolling her eyes, “You were gonna eat it all? Yeah, in your dreams. Fur needs us for something important, we don’t have time to change out of these either.”
“Now, c’mon, let’s head out.”
Together, the duo rushed downstairs, the pitter-patter of their footsteps followed the rhythm of raindrops falling down onto the fresh soul.
Fredas still wishes that dream could’ve been finished fair and square.
