okk, mimi comic of Kip and Yewrad! Kip isnt his birth name, and he partook in the naming ceremony from Neek's hometown. Yewrad has to think about how he views names and what they mean to other people
anyways this doesnt actually happen in the story, but like. theyre my characters. i COULD make them do that if i want. i stopped liking this comic about 2/3 of the way done with the lineart, idk i think its kinda crap, but @mister-skunk said they liked it so whatever. all the art i draw is practice at least. @heytheresbrutus hope you like >:)
(and im probably done making comics abt the name thing, i just had these w ready, sorry to keep drawing that stuff so much)
More character refs for artfight! Now we have Juniper and Mixer, two of the ocs ive had the longest! Another one is coming, Aves, who looks just like Mixer but is Junipers best friend and not T’s, and she is the official oldest oc that ive ever had, probably the first real oc i made :)
working on this comic thing rn and i just realized that yewrad has probably had only like 10 hugs since he was 2. its been like 19 years. hm. i hope no one rlly likes him bc that going to be very fun to draw and if he were real yewrad would hate me for what im gonna draw probably :)
Ok then. Honestly, he would probably think it was a bit weird but then just accept it. His best friend growing up was a snow leopard centaur, and his life has only gotten weirder since then 🤷
these were supposed to be just some quick sketches of Yewrad, but ended up taking around 4 and a half hours, more time than most of my detailed drawings. this is fine :)
this is my scruffy boy, he's very loud and excited and ready to hit things with his bat
This guy^^^
When yewrad was 2 or so, the war between his home country (Ristafediad) and Kyoiyaeja was lost. He lived where the top dot is in Rist. in the first image. His parents were killed in the war, and he was sent to live in this area?
Where the dot is in the middle of Kyoiyaeja on the second drawing is where he lives. It was almost like a boarding school that had a lot of orphans of the war. there were these big white buildings that had kids separated into ages and genders. schools were attached to these buildings, so it was just kinda. government mandated boarding school. They weren't given lots of money or things while living there, so most of the kids were very possessive of their things. It wasn't the first school he had gone to, there was the first one from when he was 4 (the age school starts) to 14, and then the current school which was from 14 to 20. Schools are divided into 4 quadrants, each taking 4 years. The first school was a few hours south of where he is now, and there were lots of languages there, so he grew up multilingual, and where he is now there are even more, so he speaks A LOT of languages. this comes in handy.
ok uhh anyways other stuff. Naming system!
So in Ristafediad, there is a very common naming system. Nearly everyone uses it, and honestly some people look down on the ones that don't. so imagine there's this kid right? this is how their name is decided
They have their mother's first name, changed slightly for the masculine/feminine/neutral version*. their middle name is their paternal grandfather's first name, and last name is maternal grandpa's first name. Middle and last names are not changed for the kid's gender. Mother and father in this refer to birthgiver and other participant no matter the gender they are, but this is quicker to type. When couples get married, they will choose a new last name of their own.
*([John as base name] Johni, Johnd, Johnr, respectively)*
Yewrad doesn't actually follow this! His mother's name was Yewrelid, his father was Hinyadi, Pat. grandpa was Keuriti, Mat. grandparent was Riseetyr.
Going based off of the standard naming system, Yewrad should have been named Yewrelidi Keuriti Riseetyr. When Yewrad was going to be born, the war seemed like it was heading downhill for Rist., and his parents didn't know if they would survive it. they wanted to make sure that he had a bit of all of his family, and this was more similar to the Kyoiyaeja way of naming people, so his parents figured they might take a bit of pity on him if it seemed like his parents liked Kyo. Instead of the normal names, he was named Yewrad Keureetyr Sallow. He has both his parents and both grandparents. (I had already named him when I realized his name said out loud sounds very similar to "you rad creature" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ oh well) His parents figured that if Rist. won the war, they would just change his name to what it should have been originally, but that did not happen and then they were dead sooooo
The only photo Yew has of his family has their names written on it, so sometimes when he shows other native Rist. people it, they start calling him Yewrelidi, which he hates. He knows his name isn't normal, but in a way it keeps the people that should be with him now closer to him, and he does love that. this comes up later.
Nicknames are VERY special, and so I've catagorized them :)
Dating/Bsf (you would literally die for this person): a complete replacement of their name, you cannot tell what their name originally was. It would be something like Road >> Refrigerator. the nickname doesn't always have to mean something, but it shows dedication to the person, and is rarely used unless the 2 people are completely alone.
Family/Very close friends: partial replacement. something more like Road >> RoLem. You can kinda tell what the og name was, but only if you knew what their name was beforehand.
Just close friends: just an addition to the name. the og name is the main focus, but there's a bit more fancyness. Road >> RoadKi
Also, even the 3rd option is still someone that you would like want at your wedding, you do not nickname someone unless you are FRIENDS friends.
Sometimes when there are friend groups that all agree on nicknames, they will make the names match. (Road, Skunk, Garlic >>> RoadLo, SkunkLo, GarlicLo// RoadLu, SkunkLa, GarlicLo) Its not always but still I think its kinda cute
So kinda obviously, names are EXTREMELY important in this culture. but wait, there's more!
If you make a huge accomplishment, sometimes you can be given another name. These can be for like graduations, winning awards, all those fancy big accomplishments. The average is 9-12 or so, and the max is 30. these can be used to like seem cooler I guess? like if you have more names there are better chances of getting loans, jobs, things like that, but its never an actual requirement, (there's laws against that) kinda how a college degree isn't really useful now, it just makes you seem a bit fancier or whatever. of course, you cant just write down 10+ names whenever, so you get this little symbol to write after your name, to show how many you have. You still have a ton of last names, but you don't need to spend 3 hours writing them
yeah! so thats the naming system. Generally everyone receives their first name when they graduate their version of high school, but when Kyo. took over, they dismantled the official naming thing. Most Rist. people still use it, its just not like legally their names and stuff. the nickname thing though is still used by almost everyone.
this one is more complicated, and you cant just write it down like Neeks language can. the letters change a bit depending on some other letters, so its just a lot. i might make a separate post about their languages if anyone wants it, but i dont wanna do it here so i wont :)
Yewrad's parents met kinda young when they both reached for the same notebook. they both LOVED history, and found the fact that most of peoples everyday lives would be forgotten because no one ever wrote that stuff down for records both fascinating and devastating. That had been both of their favorite notebook to write everything down in, they very quickly started bonding over it and stuff, eventually started dating, got married, and then Yewrad was born! then they were killed
anyways so, when Yewrad was a kid and learned how to read, he had one notebook from his parents just about their lives and thoughts on everything, and on lots of pages the first word of every line spelled out "Find RoKyjatir". Once he figured that out, he started looking for this RoKyjatir person nonstop. it took him around a year and a half, because RoKyjatir is nicknamed. so no one has ever heard of them, because nicknames are a private thing. eventually, he actually runs into them, and they help him out a bit. RoKy has a photographic memory, and had multiple codes memorized. They showed Yew how to solve them, and then he went crazy with it. it turns out that that one book was COVERED in codes and ciphers for him, most of them just little notes from his parents about him (they were all super sweet and he DEFINITLY didn't cry a few times. no, never) but one of the codes led to coordinates. he manages to get to wherever they said to go, and he finds TONS of books that his parents left for him, and even ones that weren't for him. Diaries, logs, just everything. he got to learn how his parents met, what their relationship was like, other family members, just everything about what his life might have been like if Kyoiyaeja hadn't invaded. these books soon become his most prized possession.
Another thing that's important about Kyoiyaeja is that while most magic is allowed, combat magic is NOT. it is a very big crime, so no fighting with magic >:(
So one time when Yewrad was just walking around, he saw someone he knew getting beat up or something. He didn't like it, and ran over to try and help the person getting beaten up. He got in between the two, and kinda pushed the bully? He didnt know he was holding a pencil or something, and accidentally cast a combat spell. a very violent one. I'm pretty sure it was an explosive spell? so this guy is just like dead. or at least very badly hurt. and lying on the ground, VERY in view of some guards/police guys. he was chased for a while, and eventually grabbed a torch and found his way to an alley that had barrels of gunpowder. I think the military guys had been loading it into a truck or something, but it did have a reason to be there. anyways, he knew about the trapdoor at the end of the alley, he'd used it a few times before. he was able to jump into while throwing the torch and trying to make another explosion again? whatever happened, it worked, the gunpowder blew up, and everyone thought he was dead. He realized he could use it to his advantage. he liked to prank people a bit, cause harmless trouble and help out the poorer families near where he lived that practically raised him and stuff, so being "dead" meant he could do all of this much easier (I have a mini comic set up to be drawn for this if anyone wants it). eventually his luck ran out and someone saw him, so he had to leave. he snuck back to his bedroom in the building he lived in, bribed someone to help him escape the city, n left. he traveled for a bout a year, met other people during his travels who would teach him magic or give him a bit of food. it was difficult, but he honestly didn't hate the whole situation he was in. its a bit funny though, because all the prodiyens he met would think that the huge amount of magic he had was cool and would try to teach him their favorite spell, but who's favorite spell is any of the common ones? Yewrad can summon lots of lightning before passing out, freeze time for a little bit, cast an insane fireball, but he cant levitate an object to him from 6 feet away or summon a few ounces of water. And ironically, those types of spells take more out of him that the high level spells do. This drives Neek crazy.
oh yeah also Yewrad is part elf! one of his grandparents had been a nature/wood elf, the ones with the longest lifespan. Yewrad doesn't retain that many qualities from them other than the BRIGHT green eyes, he can see just a bit into the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum, and he has an extended lifespan too! its shorter because he is still mostly human, but it should be somewhere around 125ish. he is 21ish when the current story takes place
Ok so new world! a long time ago, there was this cult thing? where a huge group of people HATED prodiyens and magic itself. it was bad, they started killing anyone who used magic, slaughtering magic animals, anything even slightly magic related. there were so many members and it got so bad the the miroiyens had to step in. they talked to the leaders, and the leaders said they wanted somewhere to live that didn't have any magic. Earth had a huge magic population, but the planet itself was the least magical, so miroiyens came together and decided they would duplicate the planet and strip it of any remaining magic. the anti-magic cult would be sent to live there without any magic. the planet was destined to follow the same path as the original earth, and the populations and things would stay the same, but they would all be completely human. so that happened. Earth2 was created, but it took the miroiyens a lot of power, and the magic on the other planets dwindled for a while while the miroiyens regained their power/were recovering. Of course, the leaders of the cult wanted some special treatment. they wanted to go to Earth2, but wanted to see all of it. they made the miroiyens give them some form of immortality I haven't figured out which one yet, but they might still be on earth2. Another requirement was that they wanted to be cut off from the rest of the Galaxy, it was their own world and no one could access them. the miroiyens tried to do this, but by then they were already so tired, so its not the strongest barrier. there aren't most of the portals leading from earth to everywhere else like all the other planets have, but sometimes a creature or 2 can get through. this is how we know about cryptid and fairytale creatures and aliens and things. a few of them have gotten though over the years and were seen! also, earth2 is our world! kinda. obviously its not since it has stuff that doesn't exist, but the way I see it is that any media that is set in just base earth and doesn't have anything that MAJORLY contradicts what I've said so far could technichally exist there.
and then the original earth was filled with folklore people. it had werewolves and vampires and humans and mermaids and everything, and they all coexisted on the planet. sometimes there were more closely knit groups of one species or another, but generally everyone just hung out and lived life. its cool! I do have a lot more on the individual species and how different communities work and how like magic can differ in places, but thats for later if I want to. and I don't right now so another one!
Kip! (I don't have a drawing of him but shaggy black hair, black sweater, brown eyes, human)
Kip is a human, living on earth2 (obviously bc of the no magic thing no one on earth knows they live on a duplicate planet). he loves fantasy so much, and would give anything to escape earth. he hates school, hates home, all that he can enjoy is cryptids and his fantasy novels. One day while he's walking, he sees a jackalope/wolpertinger. being the kid that he is, he runs after it, trying to have the coolest pet in the world. he manages to catch it, gut goes tumbling through a portal. (they do still pop up sometimes, but its rare and not a stable portal) the portal opens up pretty far in the hair, and kip falls down before landing on some sort of horn. after a second, he realized that he is 12 feet in the air, clinging to a minotaur's horn. the minotaur, not liking having kip there, starts shaking his head violently and trying to get kip off. something hits it, and they start falling. kip is screaming a lot, but he lands on something soft for a second, before it disappears and he plops onto the ground. this is when he and Neek meet. Neek thanks him a bit for helping him kill the minotaur (though kip cant understand it), goes to collect what looks like money from some lady, and is about ready to leave when kip manages to pull himself together a bit and try and figure out what's going on. Neek's English isn't the best and he has a strong accent, but kip understands him. kip learns that this is NOT in fact earth, and now he is in a fantasy world just like in his books. after he can process what's happening, he is ecstatic. this is basically a dream come true, now that he isn't fighting for his life. he begs neek to come with him and teach him magic. neek explains that he cant do that exactly since kip doesn't have magic, but he would be happy to bring kip along and teach him everything else he can, and who knows? maybe kip would get magic sometime and then would already know a lot of the spells! kip is disappointed about the magic thing, but figures that this blue haired elf guy is cool enough that he could stand that and agrees to be his apprentice. he grabs the wolpertinger, which is now less skitish being back in a magical area, and the 2 leave. they almost immediately check into a hotel room and Neek passes out because killing a minotaur was so much work for him and he already barely has magic, but still. some more stuff happens, and then they both meet Yewrad and the real story starts! it involves Blobster™ and cool magic stuff and idk but I have some ideas for it
ok I'm gonna end this one here, but there will be more! were only halfway through the planets and then I have species to go through but aaaaaa! a bit closer to having all that stuff written down!
A drawing of Neek and Yewrad for Artic Fight! One of them has a very nice temperature tolerance, and the other has never needed to wear more layers than his regular outfit. He is only slightly mad about his horrible stolen mitch-matched winter gear.
