respite (n.) a short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant.
the respite is a hotel/resort thing located in an alternate timeline that serves as. well. a respite.
when people are too tired to continue living in their own world, they may wake up here one day. they may stay for as long as they'd like and may leave and return to their real world when they're ready, although that's just what everyone says because no one has left the place in a long time. rumor has it that staying for too long may result in side effects in their original world.
it's possible for someone to temporarily return to their real world when they sleep in the respite. this is not them leaving; when they leave, most physical traces of them disappear. in this case, they just stay asleep. they're still there, and will come back to the respite upon falling asleep (or otherwise becoming unconscious) in their real world.
you cannot die here.
most people who come to the respite will become residents: they just live there and be taken care of by the caregivers.
the respite is managed by a group of staff with different jobs. nobody is sure of where the staff came from (or if they even came from anywhere at all), although some people suspect that some of the staff were originally residents who couldn't leave so they got hired.
a lot of the residents, and even the staff, don't know what the respite is for sure, but all they know is that the place is ever-evolving and changes with each new arrival.
