Keep your Art Fight profiles readable: now with HTML!
Why? The point of having a profile on Art Fight is to be seen by other people! With the new HTML update, this is easier than ever (take my word for this: it's easier and less buggy than the previous editor!)
None of this is to say that you can't decorate your profile! If you can make it both pretty and readable, by all means go ahead, but readability comes first.
The best way to keep text colors readable on both light and dark themes is to not color them at all
The new editor has a button to remove text colors:
Still want to keep colored text? That's fine, just make sure it's readable on both themes. Not just visible, but also has high enough contrast against both light and dark backgrounds. Here's some colors to look out for:
pure white, pure black, and any greys close to those two colors
very bright (including pastel) and very dark colors
many neon colors (yellow, green, cyan, and pink are low contrast on light theme. red and blue are low contrast on dark theme.)
custom-set text backgrounds (no, putting a dark background under neon text to make it visible doesn't make it theme-friendly.)
For premium users: check what your profile looks like without CSS! I have custom CSS disabled for accessibility reasons and I'm sure many users do as well. It should still be readable in both light and dark themes even without your custom theme.
Other text formatting choices also impact readability
For example:
Fonts that are very decorative (e.g. cursive) or very thin (e.g. courier new if not bolded)
Text that is too small or too big
Miscellaneous tips and resources
When pasting text, paste without formatting (usually Ctrl+Shift+V) or in source mode; this is a common reason why pasted text looks weird.
Get used to editing in source mode. Do not fear HTML. It is easier to use than BBCode.
Learn HTML basics (it shouldn't take long! You don't have to learn everything there, a lot of it isn't used on AF)
Use a live code editor!! Also makes previewing your profile on multiple themes easier.
Check text contrast
Check your work on different devices (look into bootstrap for mobile-friendly advanced layouts)
If possible, ask a friend to help you check.
Note: this post doesn't cover mobile-friendliness or general website accessibility, there are plenty of resources online for those though!
If you have any questions or concerns, you can look into one of the resources I've linked above. Or you can... ask me...? if you want??
(I can only help with color contrast on light theme, mobile friendliness, layout, and basic to intermediate HTML; for other accessibility or advanced coding concerns please consult another person or service.)
Story: Respite (original work)
Prompt: #FFF 365 Blood on Your Hands - @flashfictionfridayofficial
Word count: 658
Summary: two distant acquaintances have a talk about their lives.
i'm gonna preface this by stating some stuff:
* the characters use multiple sets of pronouns - autumn (they/she), lumina (he/it)
* lumina is literally a lamp. well actually more like a humanoid robot with a lamp head but still a lamp. with the lightbulb as one eye.
* you can consider this an indirect sequel to evening's grief, though it doesn't really matter which one you read first.
"here you go." a mug was gently placed on the dining table, steam escaping from the drink contained within it. "still can't believe you're back, dude."
"don't call me that." autumn said playfully to lumina, yet her expression was stern. she picked up the mug he had just set down and took a sip. "thanks for the coffee."
"anytime! it's a nice warm drink for a fine morning like this, ain't it?"
autumn took a seat at the dinner table, prompting lumina to follow suit. he sat in a relaxed manner with hands behind his head, contrasting autumn's stiff demeanor as they put the mug back down.
"soooo...." lumina's sight drifted aimlessly across the room. "how's life been treating ya'?" it chuckled. "welp, can't imagine it'd be great, since, y'know, you're back here and all." it looked back to autumn. "what happened, anyway? why are you back all of a sudden?"
"i was about to ask you the same thing." autumn took a sip from the mug. "but no, don't worry about it. it's nothing, really."
"people don't come here for no reason."
"yeah, yeah, i know." the steam from the coffee fogged up autumn's glasses. "it's just... home and work issues, and stuff." they closed their eyes. "whatever, i really don't want to get into it. what happened here? there seems to be fewer people now..."
"huh, really? i didn't notice." lumina pondered for a bit. "y'know, now that you mention it, there really are fewer people... never thought about it that way."
"you don't think about anything much at all." autumn remarked, to which lumina shrugged off. "... i know nicey still cooks the meals and takes care of stuff around here, but like... that kid in the wheelchair? i don't see her around."
lumina perked up. "oh! you mean daze? yeah, no! she left a while back, 'cuz she wanted to go home and live her life. something about finding purpose... i don't get it, and i'll sure miss her, but i'm glad she's happy!"
"hmm... good for her." the mug had become half empty. "how's evening?"
...
good question... how is she?
"... lumina? what happened?"
"oh!" autumn's sudden follow-up question startled lumina. he must have fallen silent for too long. "i... don't know." it looked down. "she stopped talking to me ever since... the..."
"..." autumn put down the now-empty mug. "yeah..." the coffee spill stained her coat, some of it dripping down her hand. "i still think about it sometimes. how she'd continuously devote hours of her day to give me medical care.... even if i didn't really need it... just because i looked hurt."
"you were hurt, though, weren't you? from tryna get out of here? and she took care of you because she cares about you!"
"i guess so." autumn pushed her glasses back up to her face. "but that's the problem. i spent all that time getting hurt from trying so hard to escape, making her worry so much about me... for what?" they let out a sigh that sounded like it failed to become a laugh. "for... that?"
"there was nothing much you could've done about that..." lumina closed its eye. "i tried telling her to move on, 'cuz it's been two years! almost three, i think, actually! that's a long time to get over something, ain't it?" it crossed its arms. "but no, she started sayin' stuff like... i'm not being respectful, i don't understand what they're going through, i don't actually care... even telling me it's my fault or whatever. i don't even know what i did! i was just trying to make things better!"
autumn sighed. "i don't think we'll ever really understand... i just feel bad for putting her through all of this." ... "maybe i shouldn't have tried to leave if i'm just going to end up back here."
"still not your fault."
"i know, but... so much went wrong because of that..."
