I Could Really Use A Wish Right Now
Yu Gi Oh 5Ds Month 2018 started today! The Day 1 theme was Yusei, and the Day 2 theme is season one. Since it’s a little past midnight, it’s the perfect time to post this oneshot, which is a little of both. It’s set on Yusei’s birthday/Tanabata, but it’s mostly about Season One! Jack (that antagonistic “King” who had yet to repair the bonds he’d severed).
“Look what I got from the black market, guys!” Crow Hogan’s boisterous voice rang through Team Satisfaction’s hideout. “It’s a Tanabata tree!”
Yusei looked up from the half-filled-in map that he, Jack, and Kiryu had been poring over. “Tonight’s Tanabata?” he blinked.
“How do you forget your own birthday, dude?” Crow laughed.
“Eh? It’s your birthday?” Kiryu gasped. “I’m sorry, Yusei, if I’d known, I would have gotten you something!”
“It’s alright,” Yusei shrugged. “It was more important for us to focus on our mission.”
“Well, since we’ve got the tree, though,” Jack decided, “why don’t we write some wishes on it?”
“I’ll go first,” Kiryu nodded, “since I’m the leader, and all.” He picked up the Sharpie, which he had just used to color Sector F (another victory!). On a scrap of paper, he wrote his wish, and hung it on the small bonsai tree: I wish that Team Satisfaction will win control of all the territories in Satellite!
“I believe it will come true, man!” Crow encouraged.
“How could it not?” Jack beamed proudly. “We’re the best four duelists in town!”
“What’s your wish, birthday boy?” Kiryu smiled at his boyfriend.
Yusei quietly scribbled down his wish, and placed it on a bow: I wish that I will complete the D-Wheel I am building, and it will run well.
“You’ve been working on that thing for like a year already,” Crow recalled.
“Well of course it’s slow going,” Jack shrugged. “He’s trying to build a functioning bike from pieces of scrap he finds in the junkyard!”
“But it’s working,” Kiryu reminded. “Sort of.”
“I just need to tweak it a bit more,” Yusei mused. “Run some more tests…”
“Give me the Sharpie!” Jack demanded. “I want to write my wish next!”
In the biggest possible letters, and the highest bow of the tree, he wrote, I WISH TO BE KING!

Two years later, and an ocean away, Jack Atlas opened his eyes, and stared at the ceiling of his Neo Domino City apartment.
Why had that memory come to him, in a dream? he wondered, sitting up in bed, and looking out his window, at the moon. Why did he still waste thoughts on that idiot Yusei, who he had left behind in Satellite? Or on his other former friends?
“I got my wish,” Jack mumbled to himself. The bed creaked as he stood, and began pacing across the marble floor. “I did become the King. That was all I ever wanted. I am the champion of Riding Duels, adored by thousands. I’m rich. I’m famous. I never have to starve, or wear ragged clothes, again, unlike those fools.”
So why couldn’t he sleep at night? Was some subconscious guilt eating him?
No, he thought, I did what I had to do. I couldn’t stand to stay in Satellite another day. I had to escape, when Lady Luck gave me the opportunity!
It occurred to him, that Yusei had gotten his Tanabata wish, too, in a way. He had completed construction of his D-Wheel.
“And it ran like a dream,” Jack mumbled to himself, “when I stole it.”
He went into the bathroom, and splashed cool water on his face. He looked at his reflection in the mirror. Was this the face of a traitor?
“No, it’s the face of a King!” the blonde told himself sharply. “Come on, Jack, get it together! A King was all you ever wanted to be, and now you are! Aren’t you happy?”
Kiryu got his wish, as well, Jack considered as he turned off the faucet. We did seize all the territories, from A to Z. But, then, with his wish granted, he went crazy, and wound up getting himself killed.
“He’s an idiot, too,” Jack insisted as he wiped his face with a towel. He crossed back into the living room, and looked again at the moon.
“I wonder if, somewhere in Satellite, Yusei is looking at this same moon,” Jack realized. “Probably building a second D-Wheel by now….and probably plotting his revenge against me.”
Let him come, Jack thought, I’ll duel him, and I’ll defeat him again, just like I did two years ago. His cards are trash anyways.
For now, he decided he would leave the penthouse, and take the elevator downstairs, to find Mikage and ask her for some sleep aid medicine. She would still be awake, working on paperwork late into the night.
But, when he strode over to his blue haired assistant’s desk, what he saw just pissed him off more.
“What is that?” he snapped.
“I-it’s a Tanabata tree, Atlas-sama,” Mikage explained. “The festival is today, you see, a-and….”
“Take it down,” Jack demanded.
“What?!” Mikage gasped. “But, Atlas-sama….”
“Take it down!” Jack bellowed.
Mikage’s eyes widened in shock. She had never seen her boss so upset. His cheeks were wet….had he been crying?
“I want it in the garbage! In some Satellite recycling center by morning,” Jack spat, turning on his heel, back towards the elevator. “That is an order from your King.”

“Friends, bonds, legends, love - What good have they done?” Rex Episode 63
Today’s topic was favorite lines and catchphrases and I picked this rather depressing one. It just fits all the participants of the final season two duel so well and can be applied to the whole season. Yusei reconnected with Kiryu only to lose him again, Jack became a better person thanks to Carly’s love and she had to die because of him and Crow met the legendary hero he always admired only for him to turn into a villain ( also Rex bond with his brother led to him tumbling down this road of madness).
