i do have to say pragmatic arrangement turning into real romance is a truly excellent trope. what outdoes it? pragmatic arrangement turning into genuine friendship! this is why I love el's relationships with Liu and aadhya and even chloe. they wouldn't have been friends outside the scholomance necessarily, or if not for the string of events that led to them forming their alliance, but they will be friends forever because they started out needing each other for survival and ended up wanting each other.
“We're going home tomorrow. I'm going home. And my mother is going to be so happy, and for a long time, she won't care about anything, except that I'm back. But then she's going to want me to want the right things again. The things that the family think are the right things. But I'm not going to. I'm going to want the things I want, and help them the way I can help them. And those are going to be the right things, too."

Aadhya and Liu are such A-tier friends for El. Just their refusal to be scared of her, or put off by her snappishness. Even if it's for practical reasons, that's exactly what she needed on so many levels. El loves them, and they love her back, and Like Hell are they leaving her behind.
cute fits for The Real World

*Liu teaching everyone singing techniques*
Aadhaya: thanks for the tips
Chloe: yeah, not bad Liu
Liu: *smiles* thanks. You know there’s a saying with singing that if you get a song stuck in your head, it’s because your future partner is singing it
Aadhaya: oh, that’s interesting
El: ok then, who the fuck has been singing baby shark at 3 am for the past month? I can’t get it out of my head
Orion: *panics, trying not to snort*
