Born 103 years ago today: wondrous operatic Peruvian High Empress of Exotica Yma Sumac (née Zoila Emperatriz Chavarri Castillo, 13 September 1922 - 1 November 2008). All these decades later, Sumac’s divine superhuman voice still inspires awe! I revere all of Sumac’s recordings, but Legend of the Sun Virgin (1952) is a particular favourite. Pictured: portrait of gorgeous young Yma Sumac by Peter Stackpole for LIFE magazine (1950).

This is a colourization I did of Peruvian singer who went by the stage name Yma Sumac. Her birthname was Zoila Emperatriz Chávarri Castillo. She was born September 13 1922 in Callao, Peru. The stage name she picked means "how beautiful' in Quechua. She became the first Latin American singer to debut on Broadway. Her voice was considered very unique. Selling more than 40 million records, she became the best selling Peruvian singer ever.
Here is the Wikipedia article on her because there is so much to summarize here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yma_Sumac
I got the original b+w photo on Tumblr.
