Friendly Introduction to Yod
For those who don’t know a Yod is like a long isosceles triangle (as opposed to Grand Trine that’s a big equilateral triangle).
You’ll have two quincunx (150′) pointing to one placement (apex). Usually (*if you’re using astro.com) these quincunx are dotted green lines (since its a minor aspect, so you might not notice them as fast as your major aspects!). The two placements making the quincunx to the apex, will then have one sextile (60′) as the base.
What’s important here is the placements themselves. What are the planets involved? In what signs/modality? Think of the two planets making the sextile (base) as their own character, with their own individual story lines.
They’re two placements that has their own hardship, love, job, life, background that’s different from each other. Yet for some reason, they’re connected by this urge for progression, something different. Something that will come to change their life (issa movie plot).
That’s where the Apex placement comes in. Walking straight into the room like the love of their life and the greatest change they had wished for. Both base placements contest to get closer (and possibly date) the Apex, one might do something out of ordinary (put themselves out there) to stand out.
They share this commonality now, in the Apex’s appearance. Although they still have their own respective lives, this sextile is the underlying presence/acknowledge of each other at the back of their head (in relation to the Apex placement) in their individual lives.
The context of time, like ‘oh shit Apex placement is ✈️ to go live in another country soon’ urges them to feel like they should get a move on quickly. The quincunx creates a little more tension, the base placement’s competition is less about each other and more about the challenge of context, time, progression and either moving too fast or too slowly in reaction to the Apex.
What this means is, sometimes one of the base placement might take initiative but it’s rash, less thought-out. Causes conflict. And the other base placement didn’t react in time, missed the opportunity. Feels left out (it’s all about mental discomfort, than like physical action/execution of actions)
The Yod aspect Apex placement is both the stimulant for the base planet to better themselves, kind of like an encouragement like ‘hey this will get better’ (passive support).
But it’s also the one being pushed/pressured/pursued and progresses away from the base planets (the base’s hopes/dream/wishes are placed on the Yod placements, making them feel like they have to move faster etc. Move more, active pressure as well as support from the base placements causes tension and also growth.)
What both base planet didn’t consider is the discomfort it might cause the Apex placement. The tension makes everything kind of heated/frustrated between them. The Apex is the mid-point of the tension, you can kind of see this love triangle as pretty dysfunctional.
What this means for the Actual Person Who Has A Yod is that they often tend to feel like they’re missing something, like they could gain it if they just experiment around/take action to remedy that. Usually it just leads to a suppressed or dysfunctional feeling, things just aren’t working out the way they wanted it to– the ‘break through’ isn’t coming like they thought they would (desire a sense of ‘epiphany’).
It’s because they’re reacting too rashly or too slowly, or like they didn’t take into consideration their natural response to tension (the consequences of actions) as well.
The key to balancing the Yod is to look at the direct opposition from the Apex planet. Straight down, just like how you cut an isosceles into 2 right-angle triangles. If the person could ground themselves down there, and build a more promising reaction/relationship with the base placements.
If the base placements could learn when and how is the right time to react/work together, instead of going too fast and too quickly. The shift in the dynamic is that all three placement is going to gain more of an equal share in power together. Everyone becomes self-empowered individual in their own right, and this helps the Actual Person Who Has The Yod as well.
For the Person Themselves (Who Has The Yod) – look towards learning your lessons, be patient with yourself and timing things just right. Think of it as a metronome. You’re working with the beat for guidance, don’t go off track or fluster when you mess up a little, just concentrate on getting back on the beat again and finishing the song.
Yod in Composite and Synastry
For composite chart it’s easier to see what the problem is. Referencing the above, there’s an individually mirrored strive for change/progression together (at the apex) which can help fuel desire and co-operation (collaboration).
But it also points to a possibility of conflict and mental discomfort, particularly not feeling accepted by each other or like the other can’t see their vision (doesn’t approve of their method). Especially if they don’t catch themselves (timing, getting caught off guard).
Once again, look towards the mid-point between the two sextiles for grounding/resolution in the Yod aspect. If there’s a planet directly opposite to the Yod then that’s great. Remember that what we’re trying to do here is balance, distribute power between all three equally so that one don’t wield all the power and the other two aren’t left being passive.
As for Synastry, the person there’s a bit more variable here. Either one person has 2 planets in the aspect and 1 from the other, but the easiest way to talk about this is to look at the person who holds the Apex placement.
The tension is going to be pulled towards the Apex, and if that Apex placement is the only one from the person– that generally leads to the energy of their partner pursuing the Apex person/acting as the active force in both pressuring and restricting them.
If the Apex placement has one of the base position, and their partner has the other base. The Apex person may hold the power here. The power-dynamic might be shifted to be reliant on them. This isn’t necessarily a good thing since they can feel like they’re the one who’s more active of the two, the one carrying the weight.
Either way, it’s pointing to a very potent relationship that could be good if the individual learn when to take up the steps and balance it out. Look towards the mid-point between the sextile and encouraging balance in the placements involved. Learn to distribute power evenly between yourself.
