SubCulture Take 5 / Yoed Nir
In addition to his impressive passion and understanding of his craft, Israeli cellist Yoed Nir has an equally impressive biography and performance history. Yoed Nir will play SubCulture on February 1st at 7:30pm. Previously, he has performed at venues such as Radio City Music Hall, The Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, The Kodak and Lincoln Center. He has performed and arranged for Regina Spektor, Judy Collins and Paul Banks (Interpol), among others. We are honored to be part of Yoed Nir's tour of his debut album 'Suspended Hours'. Tickets to the 2/1 show are still available here.

SubCulture: Who inspired you to become a musician?
Yoed Nir: Becoming a musician is a long process, I still learn everyday new things that improve my musical skills and I am sure I will learn more and more during this life musical journey. Many musicians that I work with inspire me, some of the music that I listen to gives me the drive and push me to create my own unique musical voice.
SC: Who are your major musical influences?
YN: I would say Bartok, Shostakovich , Mahler, Jobim, Hendrix.. in general Brazilian music is my big love in the last 6-7 years..
SC: Describe your first live performance. (was it a school talent show? local battle of the bands? open mic at a coffeehouse?)
YN: I was 8, in Israel in a small conservatory, I played The Swan by Saint Saens and few audience members were in tears :-) , that's what my father says..
Music is part of me , part of my heart and soul. The music I play/ create comes from deep inside of me, a very special feeling, like blending with nature in a way..
SC: If you could perform with one artist (dead or alive) who would it be?
YN: Definitely Jimi Hendrix
If you haven't checked out this video by cellist Yoed Nir (Regina Spektor, Judy Collins, etc.), it's really amazing! I love it when musicians get creative and think outside the box. His music is comprised of only cello and voice, he's taking it to another level...crazy!
