So real about your yosuke voice post. I really didn't like his newer voice much and it stands out so much because it feels like it gets an entire pitch higher every spinoff.... which makes me sad because his original voice was GREAT there was a lot of nuance to it that the spinoff voice performance is lacking. On the same note, it feels like it's a general symptom with the persona spinoffs that the original voice performance of the characters gets further flanderized and away from the original tone of the character and it dilutes a lot of its appeal, it also happens with most of the p5 cast (especially ann) and more of the persona 4 cast (chie........)

oh my god thank you for sending this ask bc i 100% agree especially bc i feel like most of the cast stayed pretty similar depite the recasts? (with the exception of vanilla -> golden chie) so its really jarring when yosuke is the only one who sounds So Different.... og yosuke was so good and dynamic whereas 'new' yosuke is just. high-pitched and nasally... like that's not the same guy!!! they took his range 💔

huge agree w the spinoff flanderization too - not even mainline games are immune now due to p3r. it's such a shame bc atlus has so many interesting characters but ig it's too much to ask them to actually write them consistently and with care ://

everyone's always asking 'could a p4 remake give us a yosuke romance route?' but no one is asking 'could a p4 remake remove every iconic gay-flirting line and make yosuke straight?'

thinking abt yosuke's shadow again. how post-izanami's reveal that tv world shadows are affected by other's perceptions of you must have made him feel... not only bc he hated inaba since he was forced to move there and it's boring and isolating, but also bc it's not some 'secret'... those weren't just some private thoughts/ruminations. that's how other people saw(/still see?) him. some egotistical, better-than-you-hicks asshole just waiting to step on others to have some fun and get his way.... man. what the hell. no wonder he hates himself.

yosuke-adachi parallels

yosuke and adachi, while seemingly very different, actually have a lot in common. even though by the end of the game we know that a lot of our interactions with adachi were part of an act, there were clearly some moments of honesty, especially in his social link. early-game/shadow yosuke and "true" adachi have almost identical philosophies, which can be seen as early as adachi's first social link.

both adachi and yosuke are underachievers. adachi was forced to perform well in school due to his parent's expectations, but he clearly doesn't actually enjoy working hard (or working at all). when you hang out with him and nanako during his social link he always focuses on "efficiency" by getting the best results with the least amount of work. yosuke isn't forced to perform well in school, so he just doesn't try, or there is something preventing him from reaching his full academic potential.

both are also estranged from their parents. adachi only ever mentions that his parents forced him to study, and he doesn't seem to have much of a relationship with them at all. yosuke is seemingly not well-liked by his own parents or there is other strain in their relationship. this can be inferred from the preferential treatment that teddie receives, despite not technically being the hanamura's child, and yosuke's constant irritation with specifically his dad regarding junes and the way he is treated by other part-timers.

this leads into the fact that both adachi and yosuke are treated as... almost replacements through the plot and their social links. the woman who lives next door to adachi treats him as if he's her son: someone who superficially appears similar to him (same name) but is actually significantly more successful, because he's the manager of some big company, compared to adachi, who basically got demoted.

yosuke is constantly compared to the protagonist in the game - and later teddie, by his parents - because they too, appear superficially similar because they're both from the city - both 'children' of the hanamura household - but yosuke is always treated as the 'lesser' option. he's constantly framed as less attractive, dumber, more annoying, etc. etc.

and while it's obviously upsetting and annoying, both adachi and yosuke like the attention, on some level....

adachi likes being doted on by the old woman. yosuke likes being compared to his partner, even if it results in some less-than-positive feelings.

but i think the core of the parallels is adachi and yosuke's desire for... 'fun.'

they use the exact same phrasing here: they're both miserable and bored because they were both forced to move to inaba. so why not have some fun? yosuke can play hero, and adachi can play villain. so what's the difference?

it's this. adachi and yosuke are fundamentally lonely people. they want validation and acceptance. but adachi takes the 'easy way out,' and refuses to open up to others, even when others are perfectly willing to open up to him. yosuke, on the other hand, goes as far as to deny parts of himself to make himself more palatable to others, even though it makes him miserable. yosuke is also able to grow past this by confronting his shadow and through his relationships with the investigation team and his social link. adachi?

he never learns. his only motivation continues to be vapid thrill-seeking, because he doesn't feel like he can lean on others to get what he needs. yosuke can count on others to help him grow and address his issues. adachi cannot.

it actually drives me SO insane crazy how similar chie and yosuke('s problems) are.

anyone who says they aren't friends or that they genuinely don't like each other don't Get It. they just haven't had a weird high school friendship where you're so similar you sort of hate each other, but also you can't Actually hate each other, because that would mean that you hate yourself (you do) and that you want to see yourself fail (you don't). yes, they wanna punch each other; yes, they're besties; yes, we EXIST!!!

they're both... kinda outcasts? iirc chie is somewhat popular, but she def gets shit for not being "feminine enough" esp in inaba. yosuke is yosuke. junes exists.

chie is labeled as a tomboy/masculine but she doesn't really want to be; yosuke isn't "feminine" per se, but he does generally lack more stereotypically masculine interests, even his role as a "bro character" is missing junpei/ryuji's specific type of 'masculine goofiness'(??), and he is disliked enough that i wouldn't be surprised if he was seen as a (im so sorry) "beta male."

they're both jealous of their best friends, Especially as paragons of femininity and masculinity. chie because it feels like something she can't have (esp as it relates to her sexuality); yosuke because he feels that he needs to attain masculinity for social capital (and to prove that he's straight and therefore 'normal').

and they know this about each other! they have one conversation in their first year and chie has his closeted ass clocked before yosuke knows what bi people are. yosuke sees the way chie looks at yukiko and is like "i've BEEN there" <- doesn't even know its gay yet

but also yosuke loves running away from his problems and denying his feelings, meanwhile chie is one of like. three emotionally intelligent people in the investigation team. but also yosuke is smarter than her. this means they are the BEST people to torment each other. they commit gendered homo/biphobic psychological violence against each other at least three times a day. but if one of them hears someone talking shit about the other?? that clown won't see the light of day. only chie can shittalk yosuke. only yosuke can shittalk chie. the rest of the investigation team is on THIN fucking ice.

this is also why theyre not allowed to date btw (to Me). besides the fact that chie is Absolutely Not At All Interested in yosuke, and he'd only be interested in "dating" her to try to prove to himself that he's straight, the only ppl ive seen ship yosuchie are straight homophobic guys who hate their wives/gfs and misconstrue their entire dynamic as "they don't even like each other, they should date" which. die. if youre a yosuchie shipper and a normal person, i salute you, you ARE gods strongest soldier.
