Ten years later and people still have really stupid opinions about Chara and the No Mercy route.
#clicked the notes on a post comparing weird route and no mercy#which was admittedly the first mistake#'the game encourages you to do the weird route but undertale repeatedly tells you off for being on no mercy!!!!!'#you are given#SO many chances to get off the weird route#Kris really blatantly tries to get you off the weird route#on the flip side I would argue that you are LIKEWISE#incredibly encouraged to do a no mercy run in undertale actually#even pretending that you aren't encouraged to do it as a test of your abilities against undyne and sans- route exclusive bosses (#like spamton neo snow grave#but JUST like weird route the no mercy run has incredibly important character lore locked behind it that you CANNOT get on any other route#you can compare and contrast both of these routes without saying one has the moral high ground over the other#for the people who choose to play them#BOTH routes call you a monster for doing them#and both routes encourage you to keep 'being a monster' anyways because there's consequences to your actions#that impact the experience you're given playing the game#that's literally the whole point of both routes- what are you willing to do to experience everything? find every single answer?#get every achievement? be a completionist?#are you willing to kill everyone in the underground to fight sans and discover floweys backstory in more detail?#are you willing to torture Noelle and break a young girl to fight spamton neo? to see what MIGHT happen in the future if you keep doing it?#(I should clarify that I don't actually ascribe any morality to what routes you play)#(they're video games#they aren't real)#(weird route and no mercy are stories just like any other way you play the game)#(and the information you get from them is important to the overall narrative)#(I just needed to get this out of my system without going at a stranger in the Internet about their wrong video game opinions)#people act like doing anything other than a pure pacifist route in undertale is the epitome of a crime like#like there's not a dozen neutral routes that are actually pretty important for overall characterization of a lot of key players in undertale
