I'm gonna talk about Malificent now
Spoilers I guess kinda
Growing up Sleeping Beauty was my favorite princess movie solely for Malificent. I was captivated by her grace and poise. She seemed elegant yet bad ass, not evil but powerful. Plus she turns into a mother fucking dragon so there’s that. When I heard that Angelina Jolie was going to play her in a live action role my cheeks started tingling and didn’t stop for two years. But time went on and all these “gritty reboots”and “dark origin stories” came out and I was like meh. Malificent is probably gonna be just like that. Then the poster for the movie came out and I saw Ms. Jolie’s cheekbones and the tingles began again. Fast forward The day I saw the movie I googled the rotten tomatoes score. It was 50% I was going in blind. At that point I didn’t really care how the movie was as long as Angelina kept my childhood dream alive. Guyz She totally did Aaaaaaaand The movie didn’t suck ass. It was actually so. Fucking. Good! As the movie opened and there was baby Malificent talking to some dirty boy I thought, “Great this is gonna be Malificent gets scorned by a boy so now she’s totes evil cuz her heart totally hurts. Wait, eew why does Malificent have a boy”. But then you find out why there is a boy! I’m not going to go into detail as not to ruin it for anyone who reads this but just know he’s important. So just hold your contempt for romantic love always being shoved in women’s story arc for like 30 minutes, it’s worth it because of… The lessons! It taught about the folly of greed, being careful of making decisions of great impact out of emotion rather than logic, how your actions effect your future and the future of others, various kinds of true love, to never judge a person because you don’t know their history, safety and comfort comes in all forms and to me most importantly, self redemptions. Just so much. This is the first Disney movie I want my kids to see. Plus Aurora wasn’t some unrealistically mature looking 15 year old woodland nymphette who was “swept off her feet” by a dude and a horse. She wasn’t even preoccupied with finding a dude. She just happened to accidentally bump into one. Even then, even then! Her thought process was, “oh he’s cute and I don’t know what to say cuz I’m 15 and I’ve been pretty sheltered so my social skills are a lil off” but it didn’t derail her life. She didn’t change her original goal or how she was going to live her life just a peen walked into it. I really only have two problems with the movie but there’s nothing I can say w/o revealing too much. I love this movie, ya’ll. TL;DR Malificnet wasn’t a shallow film, go see it.
