MAKE ME FEEL SCARED 34. Your muse is taking a walk alone and gets followed by mine

It's guilt that drives him to linger, a flutter of wings, a shadow above.

Everything he does, he does with reason. Angeal believes fully that he and Genesis are doomed to be monsters, that their creation made them something heinous, something other than human.

But the life he lived until this revelation, the connections he's made through his career, the people he's inspired to follow... it's a betrayal that he cannot fully reconcile with. Another strike against his ruinous, perverse nature: he led innocents astray, played them right into Shinra's hands...

And for that he cannot ever be forgiven.

And Zack, his star pupil... no matter how much he could plead for forgiveness it would never be enough, for he knowingly cast him straight into the lion's den — he was young, bright eyed... and not ready for the promotion he set him up for when Angeal took the disappearing act he'd planned a month in advance. Guilt eats at him for the weight he made Zack shoulder, but he uses it only as another excuse to seek his self-destructive penance.

He's a monster. He wishes Zack saw him as one. It would be easier on them both.

Zack stops, Angeal stops. A single white feather falls down to the ground. He's not there when Zack turns around.

there's a hum, fingers tapping on the hilt of his sword before folding his arms across his chest. "apologies," eyes can't help but drift below chamber's chin but quickly snaps up with direct contact. he tries not to make it obvious but he was never good at being conspicuous; although one could easily assume its judgement. "i normally don't ask the company of another, i hope you don't mind."   /  sent by @youmourn.

he catches yasuo’s drifting gaze, but he refrains pointing it out aloud ;  the gunsmith would be remiss to deny that yasuo is an attractive man or that as such the gaze was both flattery and compliment combined. the only recognition chamber provides is the subtlety of a sly smirk. though just as confidence enters his features, he presses his glasses gently higher upon the bridge of his nose and a mirth is swift to replace.

there were few he had come across in his travels across runeterra that he found himself enjoying the company of  —  the ronin before him is among them.  “how could i deny a man like yourself, mon ami?”  his voice is as smooth as the words that fall from his tongue ; a warmth lay beneath,  “i’d be a fool otherwise.”

"DUDE. did. you. see. that?!" camera is already in hand, eyes bright and smile wide. " a little chocobo chick waddles by; black and small. he immediately crouches down and lifts the lens to their face to immediately snap a picture. "this one is definitely going in the books! hey noct, it kinda looks like you!"

   he sees the truth for what it is, now: gathering firewood is an exercise in how many songs prompto can hum before the lyrics stop making sense, or how many splinters can steal hisses out of noctis. the sunset’s light spears around them in strange reds, a reminder nighttime will threaten soon. he takes a moment, however, to crouch beside his wood pile, picking at the rough skin of his fingertips with brows furrowed in mild concentration. in that moment, he hears it; prompto, calling out a halted strings of words. and noctis doesn’t look up, not immediately.  “  c’mon, we don’t got time to sightsee⸺  ”  

   instantly, he’s quieted by the camera’s shutter, and, more than that, a soft chirping. it’s high-pitched and unmistakeable, and works wonders to have his demeanor change in a blink, maybe less.

   he can see the glint of excitement in prompto’s pupil, and, however daily of an occurrence it is, the trait doesn’t get any less endearing⸺  nor do the jokes, for that matter. meaning, he meets the comparison with a stifled chuckle, briefly scrunching his nose instead of rolling his eyes.  “  uhuh. you must be preeetty happy you’re not the only chocobo-head now.  ”  careful as to not disturb the air by stepping on dry leaves, he nears the chocobo chick with his own string of coos, significantly quieter than prompto’s, but just as tender.  “  hey buddy, you lost ?  ”  the color strikes him more than its size, recalling the words of a concerned wiz: black chocobos are a rarity these days. an omen of good luck, if you ask him.  “  i say we bring it back to camp. can’t leave a chocobo chick out in the wild these days, let alone one as rare as this. i’ll call wiz tomorrow, see if we can leave it at the post.  ”  and he moves to gather the picked wood again, tucking it under his arm. 

   nodding towards prompto in an unspoken gesture of trusting him with holding the chocobo, he spares a glance to it again, an inevitable smile to pair with his half-joke,  “  well. think i’ll have to play mother chocobo for this little guy, then.  ”

        “ hey there, honey ! ” chocolate eyes settle on them, and jessie gives a curious tilt of her head. really, she’d have thought zack to have been watching over cloud or, at least, getting some much - needed rest. he’d been through a lot. 

        “ ... didn’t expect you to swing by the bar at this hour. is the little guy doing all right ? ”

IT’S RAPUNZEL’S BIRTHDAY.  | ACCEPTING

"this was the last at the shop! i hope you like it."

She could tell straight away that it wasn’t a PROFESSIONALLY made cupcake but remained silent about it.    

The thought  is what counted and Rapunzel appreciated that Zack even REMEMBERED her birthday.   They were  such a sweet person!   Inside and out!  

Maybe even sweeter than the sweet presented to her! “Thank you!” she beamed, happily accepting it.  

 “I just love the artistic creativity ...   I almost don’t want to eat it, it’s so pretty!” 

 Though she did take a bite out of it, the creamy frosting danced on her tongue, causing her eyes to brighten! She’d be lying if she said she didn’t have a sweet tooth.    

And was that vanilla cake??  HER FAVORITE.    “WOW...   you know, I’ve made my fair share of treats and frequently visit the bakery but this....   this is something else!”     

she was perhaps playing up her reaction a tad bit -- but knowing it was likely him who made it,  she wanted to boost his confidence! 

  “You’ve made my birthday so much better! Thank you,    please send my compliments to the chef!”

ANTAGONISM — HATRED

There's the flutter of a wing, lifting up and folding itself, serving as a shield between Zack's rightful accusation and Angeal's withering composition, the man turning to face away to further the distance between what is said and himself.

Is there anything that he can say to Zack other than 'you're right'?

"What I do, I do for your protection." Hypocrite and a liar, his own mind provides immediately, another reason for his self-chastising and isolation. "My mind... it isn't my own, not anymore. The fog rarely lifts, and when it does I find myself horrified at what I let happen."

He glances at Zack from over his own shoulder, not man enough to face his star student, the most recent success story born of Shinra's propaganda department: a young boy, abandoning his life and family in order to serve Shinra's interests, subjecting himself to the whims of the science department. And what did Angeal do but enable it, make Zack strive for more ways to serve their keepers? Now he cannot see his past actions as anything but cruelty, a betrayal of the trust placed in him by his protegee.

"I am not the man you thought you knew. I'm not sure I ever was."

nero is called for different types of things by the order, their dirty work is his mission as always and well he doesn’t mind it (what can he even do about it? he wouldn’t have anywhere else to go if he said no)

there is no saying no to work, especially now with his arm, there would be no use to him if he wasn’t here so as always he is called to deal with these demons, it’s his job to deal with them but one thing he didn’t expect was the mess that was in front of him.

he remembers zack, probably the closest person he could compare to a friend who wasn’t kyrie or credo, he didn’t really bother asking how he got there, why he was even here. he remembers the cages and vaguely seeing him in one of those and nero thought maybe asking about his past would be too much so of course he didn’t, letting him say anything that he wants, not prying because of course that’s the kind of person nero is.

but he wouldn’t lie saying that he enjoyed their talks, brought some kind of normalcy to this world where he’s just supposed to be training the new people from the order, because the order knew what he was capable of, he would be of good use to them (but nero didn’t know that).

when he arrived to the area something felt wrong immediately, taking care of the demons with inhuman ease finally notices zack laying out of cover “that’s not like you to be beat by this are you alright?” no trace of blood or immediate injury, that’s good at least. 

offering his hand he did not expect to not have his hand grabbed immediately but the other thing he didn’t expect was to have his hand kissed. demon hand no less and there’s something inside of him that he can’t quite describe (is it butterflies? what would that even be?) but his cheeks grow red, for once grateful of his haircut for hiding at least a bit of it 

“get up it’s not fu-” and he keeps going, nero thinks he can hear something about being his knight in shining armor when zack would’ve been pretty capable of doing all of that, was it all a set up? but if it was really a set up why is he smiling the way he is right now?
