Diane Duane is Coming to CrossingsCon 2019!
CrossingsCon is pleased to announce our first guest for 2019: the one, the only, Diane Duane! Appearing in person at CrossingsCon for the first time ever, @dduane is the beloved creator of the series that makes us laugh, cry, question our place in the Universe, and wait for our cats to talk back (in a language we understand): the Young Wizards Series.
Diane Duane has been writing for books, comics, film, and TV for over 30 years. In addition to the 11-and-counting books in the Young Wizards series, she has written numerous other books, including some of the best-loved Star Trek novels. [text: It's been maybe an hour or two since I thought to come find this fandom (I'm not always super social) and I love you all already! Dai stihó, cousins -- well met on the journey! —greetings-and-defiance]
Today, my mom asked me why I'm so intent on my Young Wizards liveblogs, why finishing one of the books and working on editing the actual texts to Mycroft into a post was such a big deal for me. I couldn't explain it for a few minutes, but then the words came.
When I entered the fandom, made myself known, it was like walking into a room and having everyone immediately want to be friends with me.
I have a social anxiety disorder that's been getting steadily worse over the past few years, and that makes it hard for me to take the first step in making friends. The fact that so many of you went out of your way to say hello and welcome me into the fandom gave me an immediate sense of belonging and acceptance that I have only ever felt once before in my life.
I haven't gotten to know very many of you yet (I'm incredibly wary of spoilers, so I haven't submersed myself in the Young Wizards tag yet), and unless I can magic my ass to CrossingsCon, I probably won't get to meet very many of you in person, but you were all so ready to accept me based on a single shared love, and I cannot thank you enough for that.
Okay, it's after midnight and I'm getting emotional. I'll be over here, cuddling my books, and there will be a new liveblog sometime after I wake up.

Reason #2498 That the Young Wizards Fandom is Amazing
Incredible respect and love for the female characters we're lucky enough to have. Obviously some of this comes from canon, because we have so many interesting and diverse and capable women and girls of all types and abilities, but a fair amount of it is fandom. Never have I seen excuses or justifications about it being okay to ignore or mistreat our girls in the name of loving the boys. I sampled the number of fanfics about each character, and the female (or non binary) characters had as many or more stories written about them as their male counterparts. Thank you so much for that. I'm constantly blown away by how kind and supportive and positive a place this fandom is.
