Chapter 11: A Spark Reminder

Dear Traveler,

My Guardian has a helmet now. Not just any helmet, either. It’s the Young Wolf’s. His first one! The very same one he wore when he fought Sepiks Prime. Isn’t that awesome?

Yeah. Yeah, it was. So much in fact that Ghost had problems sorting through the complex arrangement of signals bouncing through his processing core while they spelled out giddy excitement — and that he almost missed his Guardian turning around to find Ikora Rey walking up to her.

The Warlock Vanguard wore a traditional set of robes today, ones made for battle, rather than the lighter one she wore while strategizing Vanguard business for hours upon hours. The fit was loose enough to allow for mobility, but it looked heavy and thick, with armour layered into already sturdy cloth. Though it still was mostly purple and had a high collar framing her neck.

At the sight of her, his Guardian’s nervous energy (the one that’d been rolling off her on the entire ride here) rose.

“Welcome to the Drumfort grounds.” Ikora’s tone was firmly planted somewhere between flat and kind — until her gaze slid over to Shephard, anyway. It gained a hint of mirth then. “You took your time.”

Shephard showed his palms, the picture perfect image of innocence.

1.) What is your guardian’s name? What does it mean? What inspired you to choose that name for them? Thera is my Guardians name. It means untamed. What’s funny is, I didn’t plan this out. I didn’t know what the name meant, I just picked it out because it seemed fitting. Then when I began writing for my Guardian, I searched up what the name meant.

2.) What did your guardian name their ghost? What does it mean? What inspired them to choose that name? Thera named her Ghost Scout. If searched up, it will probably say it means ‘to listen’. Thera chose this name because Scout was always looking out for her, listening to her whenever she needed to rant, and he was a great scout on missions.

3.) What is your guardians favorite weapon of choice? What mod do they use for it? Do they have a masterwork on it and if so, how many enemies have they killed with that weapon? Riskrunner is the gun she always has on her on missions.

4.) Do they participate in the Crucible often or do they just go to complete the daily challenges? Thera definitely goes out to the Crucible whenever she gets the chance so for practice and as a workout, with or without the daily challenges. 

5.) If your guardian had to choose to be another class, what class would they pick? Or would they stay the same? She would pick warlock because she thinks their neat, but she would only choose this if she had to. She’s quite happy being a hunter.

6.) What is their favorite subclass within their own class? Gunslinger.

7.) What is their favorite subclass in a different class? Voidwalker.

8.) Would they rather receive a titan kiss ( a hard ass headbutt that mostly results in death ), asking a warlock a question that might result in a long explanation, or deciding to play the knife game with hunter and bet at high stakes? Thera would play the knife game with a fellow hunter, because she’s already really good at that game. She knows she’d win.

9.) Would they prank other guardians or just their close friends? What kind of pranks would they pull? Only her close friends. And it would probably be pranks that are like putting clear foil all on the doorway, or the “Come and get ya’ll’s juice” vine kind of stuff.

10.) Which vanguard memeber to they like to hang out with the most? She used to hang out with Cayde the most, but now Ikora is the one she hangs out with the most.

12.) What kind of hobbies do they do in their free time? Are there any particular skills they have that help them with this hobby(s)? Thera likes to cook and bake (mostly bake) in her free time.

13.) What is their favorite armor set and what shader do they use for it?  The luxe universal ornaments are what she’s always wearing, and she’s always changing up the shader.

14.) Do they prefer silence or are they unbothered in loud areas? Thera likes silence way better.

15.) Are they afraid of storms? If so, is there a specific reason why? Not really. Sometimes she will jump at a really loud boom of thunder, but other than that, she actually quite enjoys them a little bit (as long as she’s not out on a mission going through the rain).

17.) How close are your guardian and their ghost? If they are not close, would your guardian kill their ghost and choose to answer the darkness’ calls? Thera and Scout are really close. Scout had been there with her through it all. The death of her fireteam, all the battles she’s faced, the Red War, Eramis, and the meeting of new friends and finally coming out of her shell.

18.) Would your guardian engage in a romantic relationship with Fallen, Cabal, Hive, etc? If so, what do they find attractive about the species? No, she wouldn’t. She would be friends with Fallen, but that’s the closest relationship any species besides exo, human, or awoken is going to get.

20.) Does your guardian like plants? If so, what kinds? Do they prefer flowers or trees or shrubs? Would they start a garden? Thera does like plants, and really likes any kind of flower. Though the only plant she had in her room is a single, small, aloe plant. She would never even think about starting a garden, because she could never take care of a bunch of plants.

21.) If your guardian became obsessed with something, what would it be? Movies like MARVEL and Star Wars. Oh wait, she’s already obsessed with that.

22.) Do they like reading books or watching movies or both? What genres are their favorites? Does their fireteam have the same taste? She likes both. She likes fantasy, and secretly likes a bit of romance books. As for movies, she likes fantasy and any kind of action movie.

23.) What kind of music do they like? Do they dance around anybody in any situation or in the privacy of their quarters? What would their favorite song from the Golden Age be? Thera loves classic rock. She doesn’t dance too much whether in public or in privacy, not because she’s shy, but because she simply doesn’t want to. But she’s actually good at dancing, and if you challenge her to a dance battle, you will lose.

24.) What does their living space look like? Are there a bunch of pictures around or do Knick knacks cover the shelves? Do they enjoy bright, neutral, or dark colors? Would they purchase a fur rug? Thera’s room in bigger than the rooms they give other Guardians in the Tower. She has a big bookshelf filled with knick knacks, and she enjoys a darker color scheme. She also would purchase a fur rug.

25.) Do they travel around the city often? If so, what are their favorite places to go and who do they go with? Are the civilians ever excited to see them or do they give them a look because of precious mishaps that resulted in property damage? Thera doesn’t go around the city too often, though sometimes she will join her friend Ann, and Shaxx, when they go to play dodgeball with the kids. The kids and other citizens like seeing her around.

26.) Are they good with kids? If not, how do they react when a child tries to talk to them? If they are good with kids, what kind of things do they do to entertain them? She thinks she isn’t, and says she isn’t, but kids actually love her. When around kids, Thera tells them stories. 

27.) Are they in love with Shaxx? Not in love, just friends.

28.) When your guardian sleeps, are they stiff and stay in one spot or wild and kick off the sheets? Do they have nightmares often and if so, about what? How often do they sleep? Thera usually wakes up with the blankets all messed up, so she assumes she kicks her feet or something in her sleep. She has nightmares a lot more often now, with everything that’s going on. Usually these nightmares are about what if another war with the Cabal happens, or ones about her former fireteam haunting her, or her loosing those closest to her. And Thera sleeps nearly every night, though getting the full eight hours is another story.

29.) Do they enjoy coffee, tea, soda, or water? Would they mix all of these together and drink the liquid on a dare? She enjoys all of the above, though she likes her tea iced and sweet, not hot. And yes, she would mix all of these and drink it.

30.) What about their personality attracts other guardians to them? What is it about other guardians that attracts your guardian to them? It’s really the fact that she’s a hero that attracts anyone, but that’s not personality. Really, fellow Guardians didn’t talk to her a lot because she didn’t show much of her personality, but now she’s slowly coming out of her shell. I would say, that her risk taking is something that a lot of Guardians, especially hunters, like about her. And as for what attracts Thera to other Guardians, it’s their humor, their risk taking, and also what their attitude is like.

Thera’s Journal Entry #50

(Wasn’t planning on posting any journal entries, but I had the urge to after playing this weeks new mission)

I had been taking part in a lot of battlegrounds lately. I had been in my ship earlier today, after just finishing an assignment given to me by Lord Saladin. Crow was going to slip in to investigate the plans for the Vex prediction engines. He had said that with me on the front lines, it would be easier for Crow to slip in unnoticed. 

After getting the message on my jumpship that Crow wished to see me, I headed to the H.E.L.M immediately. When I transmatted there and went down the stairs, Crow quickly waved me over. I removed my helmet and tucked it under my arm as I reached him.

“Listen, I’ve been combing through the prediction you pulled from Nessus. I’ve got bad news.” He told me solemnly.

My shoulders slumped and I began to worry.

“I think the Cabal are going to try to take Zavala out.”

My heart leaped into my throat.

“He’s missing from every single one of the futures they’ve predicted. Not missing, “where’d he go”, missing. Dead, missing. Osiris says they’re only possibilites, but I think it’s the real deal. Zavala has refused to work with Caiatl. It’s in her best interest to remove him.” He wiped his arm through the air. “Sends a strong message. Glint can’t pinpoint a time and place yet. We need more information. Word is the Vex have always had trouble predicting you. Maybe that’s our edge. What do you say? Wanna help prevent another prophecy?”

“You already know I’m in. I know how it feels to loose a Vanguard. I refuse to let that happen to the Titans.”

Not only that, but Zavala was a leader figure to everyone. Every Guardian, no matter the class, and every civilian. If he were to die it would cause chaos all throughout the city. I’m not sure who we’d find to take his place, but I can tell you now, they won’t be the same as Commander Zavala. Him and I didn’t always see eye to eye on things, since I liked to be more risky in my ways when I could, and usually broke the Vanguard rules, but he was still a good Commander, and I couldn’t imagine anyone in his place. I also thought of Ikora, who still was hurt by the death of Cayde. I refused to let her lose another close friend.

I left promptly after Crow explained what I was to do, which was destroy the Vex that were on Europa, hoping for some kind of fragments. On the way there, I tried to sort out my worries. I tried to push away my ‘what ifs’ about the situation, and there were a lot of them.

What if the prophecy turned out to be true? What if Zavala were killed? Who would be the new Titan Vanguard? How would Ikora feel? How would everyone else feel?

I knew how everyone else would feel. The same way they felt when Cayde died. Mourning for weeks, and the Titans would continue to mourn longer than others. That’s what us hunters did. Some of us hunters still can’t bear to here Cayde’s name, because when we do we nearly break down into tears. And Ikora, Ikora would be broken. Her two best friends, taken from her.

I continued on with my missions, going through lost sectors and fighting off Cabal and Vex, Crow guiding me throughout the way.

Finally, after hours of fighting, I returned to my ship.

“Crow will want to see you again to discuss.” Scout said.

“I know, I know.” I said, pulling off my helmet. My armor was dirty and covered with Cabal blood. I sat in the cockpit and set the coordinates for the Tower. Soon I was transmatted into the H.E.L.M once more.

“Thanks to your fieldwork,” Crow began when I arrived. “I have an idea of what the Psions are planning. It’s not good.” He said with a shake of his head. “This gadget you found, it’s a tiny Light-disruptor. Small, but strong enough to knock down a Ghost.”

I took a deep breath in. No, I whispered to myself in my mind. No, no, no.

“Saladin says that when the Cabal seized the City, they severed our connection to the light. Looks like the Psions have refined that tech. It’s... elegant, actually.”

I felt my blood boil slightly. “Elegant!” I exclaimed. “Crow, this is a device that can take out a Ghost. That Ghost could be Scout, or Glint! Elegant is certainly not the word to use.”

“And it’s deadly too.” He added. “They wouldn’t need to fly a whole fleet into the city to use it, just one single gunman.”

“You think I don’t understand that?!” I took another breath to calm myself. “Crow.” I said in an even voice. “I’ve seen Ghosts die before. Or at least, felt them die. Blaze, Blythe, Sundance. I know anything that can take out a Ghost is deadly, even if it is unlikely that the gunman will catch a Guardian or their Ghost unawares. But it has happened before, to the best Guardians I’ve ever known. I didn’t mean to shout, but do not call a weapon that can take out Ghosts, elegant.”

“I’m sorry.” He said silently. “I will tell Osiris. And I’ll keep an eye on the Commander. You know... just to be safe.”

I nodded. “Make sure he doesn’t see who you are. Keep your mask on at all times. And stay safe.”

I looked around then reached over and lifted his mask to press a quick and gentle kiss to his lips. “I have other work to do. Meet me in my room after work is done. Ann is adamant on the three of us playing this board-game called Monopoly. I’ll explain it later.”

And I turned and walked off.

Ann’s Journal Entry #8

“I know exactly why you’re coming with me.” Thera stated, walking along a few feet ahead of me.

Our Ghosts flew off to the side, talking about anything and everything.

I took in the sights of the landscape, which was why I was slightly behind. I wanted to see everything I could while I had the chance.

“So why do I want to go with you?” I asked.

We were headed to the Rouge’s small camp. Thera had asked her a month ago (give or take, I’ve never been good with times, Poppy usually keeps up with that for me) to watch out around the City, and see if any Cabal neared it or anything of suspicion came up. We had come back to inform her of what had transpired, and to check in and see if she had found anything. Thera usually went once a week to check in, and the coms would always be open if Rouge found anything really important.

“You’re curious. You want to find out as much as you can about Rouge and her past.” Thera answered me.

I sighed. She was right.

“Why doesn’t Rouge ever talk about her past? Why is she so secretive?” I asked Thera.

“Why didn’t I talk about my past? It hurts. I don’t like talking about the Red War, or any other battles, because they hurt.”

“But you didn’t like to talk about Zane and Sora either.” I argued. “And now you talk about them a lot more, because you’ve gotten comfortable. I could get Rouge comfortable with talking about it too.”

“I doubt it. Some people take longer to heal, and some people have been through worse and more than others. Don’t ask about anything.”

“Then how else will I found out?”

“She’ll tell you if she wants you to know.”

I huffed, but knew Thera was in the right.

Ten minutes later, we arrived at a small rundown-looking cabin. Windows were broken, and some wood was badly damaged. The porch’s floor had collapsed in on one side.

Then Rouge came out.

She still had her helmet on.

“Come. We have much to discuss, and I’d like to know all of what has happened as of late.”

Thera and I entered to house, which was surprisingly a bit homey on the inside.

“I was not aware that you would bring Angelica.” Rouge stated. “Would the two of you like tea or anything? I’m afraid I don’t have food, but I’m sure I could get something if you’re hungry.”

“We don’t need anything Rouge. We had food and something to drink before we left.” Thera answered her.

Rouge nodded. “Now, straight to business. Tell me everything.”

Thera and Rouge sat at a small table, and Rouge pulled up one of the patched up chairs so I could be near as well. Then Thera began to tell what all had happened. The agreement with Caiatl, the attempted assassination of Zavala by psions. But what surprised me was that she told about how Crow’s identity had been revealed.

I straightened. “Are you supposed to be telling her that? Does she know? How long has she known?”

“I told her.” Thera simply stated.

“I have nothing against the man. In fact, I am glad that Zavala has accepted him, and Ikora too. I only hope that fellow Guardians react the same way. What I would give to be accepted, not as the person who I once was, but as the person I am now.”

“You were a bad person in your past life?” I asked, and Thera shot me a look.

“Please, do not restrain her from asking any questions. I’ll answer what I want to answer, and I suppose it won’t hurt for her to know things about my life.” This Rouge said to Thera. Then she turned to me. “Not in my past life, young one, but this one.” She sighed, then looked through the dirty and broken glass of the nearby window.

“I was resurrected just a few years prior to the City’s assembling. I was young, and at the time, could easily be corrupted. I was told things, and I believed them. I joined a gang of Guardians. They weren’t nice either. And there were many other gangs as well. Gangs that my gang hated. I was sneaky, silent on my feet. They sent me with but one job. When a Guardian of another gang got in their way, I was to shoot down their Ghost, and then kill them. Much of the first few years of my life were spent killing Ghosts. Watching the light and then life flow out of fellow Guardians. And what’s worse, is I thought I was doing the right thing. I learned that the gang really cared nothing for me. For the longest time, I believed that they were family, yet they were only using me.

“I finally learned this when I was captured by our rival gang to be put up for ransom. This was when the City was currently being built. The gang no longer needed me I suppose, and told the gang to, basically, kill me. But this other gang, seeing the hurt and betrayal, gave me mercy. We spoke with each other, and they gave me answers. I learned that what I had previously thought was right, was wrong. The leader, a woman by the name of Allison, allowed me to stay with them.

“Many of the people of the gang despised me, and I could not blame them. I had taken out many of their friends, teammates. These Guardians were family to each other, and I had stripped them away from so many. Though there were a few who accepted me, and I suppose that would be enough.

“Upon the building of the City, many Guardians headed there with their gangs. Our gang was one of them. It took many months to reach it, since at the time we had no ships or Sparrows. Nothing but our feet, and our Ghosts to keep us alive. But, we did arrive, and upon that I saw familiar faces from other gangs. And they saw me. They knew who I was, what I had done, and hated me. Many tried to kill me and my Ghost, as I had done to so many before. Allison was the only one who was able to stop them from doing so. I helped where I could, no matter what others thought, but soon I realized I had to leave. And so I did.

“I had swore one thing to myself, back when I had joined Allison’s gang. That I would never kill another Ghost, or another Guardian. But as I walked away from that City, I decided that I would do it once more. I would hunt down the gang who had wronged me from day one. Who had betrayed me, and I would kill them. I kept their Ghosts alive, however. I could not bear to pull the trigger on another little light. And because I had spared them, they promised that they would either find new Guardians, or that they would go on without one.”

I was silent for a moment. “That’s why you hide your face. And that’s why you changed your name. So other’s wouldn’t remember you, or what you’ve done. Like what Crow does.”

Rouge nodded. “I suppose that was more than what you asked for.”

“But it’s alright. I’m glad you told me. It means you trust me. And if it makes any difference, I won’t ever judge you for any of that. It’s in the past.”

I had a feeling that Rouge was smiling.

“Can I ask you one question?”

“Sure.”

“What happened to Allison, or any of the other gang members?”

“I’m not sure for all the gang members. But Allison was one of the many lives lost when we were lightless in the Red War.”

“Oh.” I said silently. Allison had seemed like a person I’d like to meet. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.” She turned back to Thera, who sat across from her. “Am I still needed here?”

“I would suggest so. I don’t know if any other Psions will try to sneak in.”

Rouge nodded. “Then I will stay. You both should probably be going. I’m sure the two of you have missions to do.” She stood. “Goodbye, you two.”

We walked out the door and Thera started off, but Rouge stopped me.

“Ann.” I turned around. “You are the first person who I have talked to about that in a long, long time. I’m not sure what it is, but it’s as if I knew that I could trust you with that knowledge. As if you were someone I could truly talk to. If you ever are around, feel free to stop by. I wouldn’t mind telling more.”

I nodded with a smile, and ran off to catch up with Thera.

Thera's Journal Entry #59

"Guardian?” I leaned forward as I asked.

“I’m not sure. They never had a Ghost out.” Rouge answered, sitting across from me at the two person table in her small, old cabin. “I don’t think they are, but I have nothing to prove it.”

I nodded and straightened in my chair, then took a sip of the tea Rouge had made me. It tasted too bitter for my liking so I put it back down.

Rouge had run into, well, another rouge while she was out scouting. While the Cabal and the City did have an agreement, Rouge still stayed out here to watch for anymore traitorous psions.

Rouge had told me that when she had snuck up on this new person, and when they noticed her they didn’t even make a move to harm her. They only continued to lay on the ground face-up, staring at the stars. They didn’t say anything, only that they weren’t there to harm anyone and only wanted to join the view. And they had said something about how it had been such a long time since they had seen the stars. That was something that didn’t make sense to me, but I knew there was no point in asking Rouge since she wouldn’t have an answer either. Rouge only gave them a quick warning that they shouldn’t be around this territory, then promptly left them be.

“Honestly, I’d say just leave them alone if they aren’t hurting anything.” I told her.

“I guess that’s what I’ll do. At least until they pose a sort of threat.”

“I wonder why they’re out here and not in the City.” I voiced aloud.

“Probably the same reason I’m not in the City. They’ve got history there, and not good history either.”

I stood. “I should get going. I’ve got another mission in less than an hour on Europa. Elsie hates it when I’m late.” I turned and walked towards the door.

“Hey.” I stopped before I had Scout transmatt me and looked towards Rouge to see what she had to say. “They call themselves the Ranger. I asked them when we met. I’m not sure what you can do with that, but I feel like it might be important that you know their name.”

“They have a big iron on their hip?” I asked with a grin at my silly joke referencing the old Marty Robbins song.

Rouge tilted her head to the side.

“Nevermind, you wouldn't’ get it. Thanks.” And then I was gone.
