i was thinking about this the other day, i love movies but they don’t stick w me? at all i just feel an hour and a half is really little time to develop a plot correctly, of course there are exceptions but i enjoy books/series more for this reason
yeah yeah i think that's part of it!! and i guess it helps that with film you experience it all in one go while with books and series and even with things like video games you pour a lot of time and effort into reading/playing/watching it all and finishing it while with movies all the effort consists of a time span of the movie's length which is rarely more than a few hours at the very most.
of course there is movie series and franchises but they're different for various reasons. kind of an in between for series and movies. like the marvel cinematic universe for example, it also had a few movies that managed to stick with me but i didn't mention it because it's a rather different case than most movies.
thing is other sorts of canons don't have time limits and you don't have to condense everything that makes a work of fiction-- not just plot but you know characters and themes and details and all the little things-- into the limit of a few hours while also making sure the script is plot is solid and well paced with good structure. so they have plenty of space, so to speak, to flesh out their work and makes it more-- expansive, larger?
and with a movie all there is to the canon is what was in those few hours. other works of fiction are larger and have more to go back to and rethink. which is in part of what to me personally gives a work of fiction the ability to really stick permanently. i don't think it's impossible to make a movie of the same scope and feeling and development as work of fiction without a time limit, but it just takes a hell lot of skill in directing and script writing. it's most of all difficult to make an 'individual' work that exists on its own under these conditions.
but yeah there are of course exceptions and this is all just how it works for me personally i know there are def people out there for whom it's not like that at all and i don't think it's 'wrong' since it's all personal preference and taste but it's pretty interesting to think about
