 “If I have to deal with one more old doctor telling me he’s innocent, I might just throw myself into the ocean,” the half-baked threat is a regular one, especially when a new case has been thrown into his lap; it was a typical set-up (someone’s suing a doctor, said doctor refutes the claims despite the slew of coworkers or associates that agree that the lawsuit has reasonable merit), but it was already driving him insane. 

                    “I swear, I’ll just hurl myself into the Pacific.”

They’re at the fairground. Jake’s also lost his small girlfriend in the crowd.

“Holly!” He calls out. “Holly!”

It’s absolutely ridiculous. He half-expects the Benny Hill theme to start blaring down his ear.

He pushes past several people, trying to be polite but the thread of patience he has starts to wear thin, to go over to one of the stands--one where you throw a ball and hit a coconut stand? that one.--when he bumps into someone who just about reaches his chest.

“Holly? Holy shit, I almost stepped on you. C’mere, I’ll carry you.”

She doesn’t look to pleased. Either at being knocked over or the slight dig at her height.

“C’moooon. Piggyback. Won’t lose each other, then.”

She looks appeased.

Jake had shoved Holly into the small closet before him and closed it behind them, and had waited for the sound of his twin running past to fade into nothing.

“Sorry,” he gasped out, “he just--” He hacked out a cough. “Aw, God, wouldn’t stop tickling me. Jesus.”

Which didn’t really explain why he shoved Holly in there with him; he did think, for a fraction of a second (all he could afford before his brother came barrelling around the corner), that if he just hid and Josh asked her, she’d tell him, with nothing less than a trickster’s grin.

He pressed an ear against the door. “... OK. Think he’s gone.” He tried the handle--it didn’t budge. “... Oh no.” He turned back to Holly. “Just gimme a sec--”

It took him about a minute of door-handle jiggling and shoving his shoulder against it before giving up. Looking at Holly, he cringed. “I’m... so sorry. I can--when we get out, I can make it up to you. Yeah?”

Oh boy, you better.

Jake rolls his eyes, but he grins all the same. “Like I’ve never heard that one before, Holly.” He picks her up and plants a big kiss on her cheek. “That’s the sort of thing boyfriends do, isn’t it?”

“Holly, what the fuck?!”

Jake is very tired–a long day of forcing himself to concentrate on college work and Josh not answering any of his calls grated on him and he couldn’t force himself into the mindset to talk to anyone else. And he’s not sure what set off this–were they arguing just now? fuck, why doesn’t he remember? it was most likely something stupid or something he could’ve done or whatever on a better day but just not today–but he doesn’t fucking appreciate it.

His cheek stings.

 “Babe, you’re not still mad at me, are you?” because if she was, then he knew a few ways to fix that (but if she was seriously mad, then those methods probably wouldn’t work - he hoped for a more mild anger, if we’re being completely honest here).

“Oh.”

He wasn’t watching were he was walking--he wasn’t even drunk, it was just badly-placed footing--and ended up knocking into Holly. Which lead him into trying to catch her by the shoulders. ... Which lead him to kissing her. 

Blame that on poor impulse control. Or funky motor skills.

“S-Sorrry. Um.” Kisses her on the forehead. “... Nevermind.”

“Hey, Holly! I know it’s your birthday soooooon-ish, so I thought: Hmm! Maybe I should take her somewhere nice! Either before or after your actual birthday, because I know you’ve got plans all day for that. Well. Someone has plans for the day--but yeah! So I have a got a few restaurants in mind and I can bring round some... stuff to show you what they’re like and you can decide and... yeah.
