sam:
Her expression breaks down little by little with his open response. ‘If you need someone’ he had said. Maybe, it’s also the fact that he’s looking just as wounded and broken as she feels. She can’t cry but her expression still mirrors visible pain and solemness. It’s almost ironic. Prior to all of this she has never been too close with Mike. She had always been Hannah’s best friend. The others were sort of a packaged deal. But now everything is different.
She thinks of Hannah’s diary filled with scribbling of her last days and Beth’s grave, and her throatchokes up.
Having company would be nice. Appreciated. Harder to fake a smile but better than drowning in sadness.
She almost asks him.
She almost forgets.
Her smile is more real then, a little bittersweet. “Thanks, Michael, but I’m sure Jessica needs you more.”
Sam can’t be selfish. She’d rather suffer in silence.
Jessica. He hadn’t even seen her yet, what with the immediate interrogations, followed directly with hospitalization; word spreads fast when a group of kids give every official that listens the same psychotic, ridiculous story, though; he knew she was alive, he knew she was okay ( though, he didn’t think any of them were truly okay -- physically, maybe, but even that is a bit iffy ).
“Is she still...” locked up? under both police and medical scrutiny? He settles for simply leaving the question open-ended, not really wanting to vocalize any of those options. Sam knew what he meant, anyway, or at least he hoped so.
