Headcanon that Thorin doesn't trust the jewellery or gold in the treasury but still wants to shower Bilbo in all the finest things Erebor has to offer. So he takes to forging new beads for Bilbo's shaggy hair, golden cuffs for his ears, and silver circlets for his crown, himself. Bilbo has never valued things like jewellery but he can tell how much Thorin put himself into each piece and wears them with pride.
