FAQ for New Kwanzaa celebrants! Is there a specific way to light the candles? YES! (SEE image above) As we have been learning more ourselves about Kwanzaa, and preparing for our First Kwanzaa event this Saturday @dine_amarachi from 2-6pm We realized so many sources and images on the web and social media have the wrong order of lighting the candles, light the middle black candle first, the go from left to right 1. Umoja (Unity) 2. Kujichagulia( Self determination) 3. Ujima (Collective work and responsibility) 4. Ujamaa (Cooperative Ecomomics) 5. Nia (Purpose) 6. Kuumba (Creativity) 7. Imani (faith) Why is it done in this order? The colors of Kwanzaa are black, red and green; black for the people, red for their struggle, and green for the future and hope that comes from their struggle. Therefore there is one black candle, three red and three green candles. These are the mishumaa saba (the seven candles) and they represent the seven principles. The black candle represents the first principle Umoja and is placed in the center of the kinara. The red candles represent the principles of Kujichagulia, Ujamaa and Kuumba and are placed to the left of the black candle. The green candles represent the principles of Ujima , Nia and Imani and are placed to the right of the black candle. (Source- Official Kwanzaa Website) Come celebrate with us This Saturday!
