Blackbird's Origin Story

Ben Macaw is a 17-year-old boy, the oldest of three siblings. His family, the wealthy Macaws, owns and operates Macaw Industries in Cardinal City. From a young age, Ben had a strong sense of justice. The city he grew up in was beautiful but corrupt and riddled with crime. With help from Macaw Industries, the city became safer and cleaner, though danger still lurked in its shadows.

In middle school, Ben discovered that one of his teachers was involved in human trafficking. In a moment of righteous fury, Ben tackled the teacher and beating him unconscious. The teacher was arrested, but Ben was sent to military school as a consequence. There, he learned discipline and various new skills while expanding his intellect and finding his love for birds, mostly crows.

As an early adolescent, Ben's family became the target of a criminal organization due to their wealth and influence. One fateful day, Thomas was supposed to be at home, but Ben went to Macaw Tower to visit him, missing Dawn’s recital at Cardinal City Elementary. When he arrived, he was told there was no meeting scheduled—his father had just concluded a private meeting with Johnathon Creen, Thomas’s old friend and CFO. As Thomas packed up his things and requested a four-month leave to spend more time with his family, Creen hurriedly left the room, acting suspicious. Moments later, Thomas realized he forgot something and opened his desk—revealing a ticking bomb. He pushed Ben away just before the explosion. Ben found his father in the rubble, mortally wounded. With his final breaths, Thomas told Ben three things: Protect and care for himself, their family, Macaw Industries, and Cardinal City. Keep everything in his suitcase and office at home a secret, including a USB drive. That he was always proud of Ben and loved him dearly. Thomas died in Ben’s arms, leaving Grace Macaw a widow and Ben, along with his younger siblings Tommy and Dawn, to grow up without a father.

A year later, Ben was a different person. Once the most popular student at his high school, he had become distant, withdrawn, and the subject of rumors—some even blaming him for his father’s death. His grades began to slip, despite his brilliant mind. One day, a former friend turned bully taunted Ben, insulting his family and mocking his father. Ben snapped, kicking the bully so hard he broke ribs and sent him crashing into a glass trophy case. When the bully’s friends jumped in, Ben fought them off, brutally and efficiently. Though this earned him newfound respect, the incident worsened his mental health and caused severe property damage.

As punishment, he was sent back to the military academy, which also functioned as a rehab facility. There, Ben made new friends and picked up more skills. But he began noticing strange occurrences—students disappearing, and restrictions on communication with families. Over the next month, Ben used his skills in stealth and espionage to uncover a horrifying truth: the academy was a front for human trafficking, drug smuggling, and arms dealing, all connected to the mafia that killed his father. Even worse, the teacher he’d once punched was part of the operation. At the center of it all was Johnathon Creen. With help from his new friends, Ben brought down the entire institution, blowing up its underbelly, freeing the prisoners, and dealing a massive blow to Cardinal City’s criminal underworld. Still, he never discovered the full mystery behind his father’s death, or why he had been given that USB and told to keep it secret. But Ben began to suspect it was all connected—his school, his family, the company, and the city. After the mission, the criminals were arrested, the prisoners were freed, and Ben and his allies were hailed as heroes. Everyone had to return to their homes, which saddened Ben, though he was glad to have made lifelong friends. One of them, Sam Avenell, stayed with him since she was from Cardinal City, too. Ben and Sam promised to stay in touch.

These events marked the beginning of Ben’s path to becoming a superhero. After returning home from the Patriot Beacon Military Center, Ben and Sam resumed their freshman year. Grace, his mother, was overjoyed to have him back. She apologized for sending him away, unaware of what he’d been going through. Ben reassured her that she had done her best, and explained he had chosen to go to Patriot Beacon to heal—and it had helped. Tommy and Dawn had known about it all along. At 14, Ben lost his father. In the final days of being 16, Ben decided to clean out his father's office at home before it was repurposed. While cleaning, he found a hidden USB port. Upon inserting the USB, an AI voice asked for identification. After Ben confirmed his identity, the office transformed, revealing gadgets and a sleek, crow-themed suit. A recorded message from Thomas revealed a stunning truth: in his youth, he had been a superhero known as The Crowman, a protector of Cardinal City and leader of the Coalition of Liberty, a golden age team of heroes. Eventually, life took its toll on him and Grace.

With the help of Macaw Industries, Thomas retired to live a quiet life once Ben was born. Ben upgraded the suit—modernizing its look, removing the camp, and enhancing it using Macaw Industries tech. He kept the glider-like wings in place of traditional flight and renamed himself Blackbird, using gadgets like the Crowdarts (similar to batarangs) and the Grapple Gauntlet. He now lives a double life, balancing his regular life with his new one—as the Avian Avenger, Blackbird.
