Working with Visual Aids

You can almost imagine how it would look with a flag.

But with only the aid of a pole Stephanie Ellsworth of Rochester’s Alternative Learning Center gives us a better idea of the motions that make for a successful parade presentation.

As a member of the John Marshall High School Color Guard, Stephanie knows all about creating five major moves with a flag to compliment the marching band.

During her speech as a part of the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program she reveals the timing and the choreography that help create the magic.

Youth Leaders Shine in High Level Visit from District Cabinet Members

Talk about pressure. If it isn’t hard enough to get up in front of your peers and do a little public speaking, add some school district education dignitaries and see if you don’t gain a few extra butterflies.

Members of Beth Rojas’ speech class seemed to take the high level visit to their classroom in stride. 

They’re a part of a Spring session of the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program which just started a few weeks ago at the Rochester Alternative Learning Center.

The YLP program offers ALC students a structured public speaking and leadership course which helps build several skills; the most important might just be the confidence to stand in front of your fellow students and to talk; whether it’s an off the cuff question or a structured speech, each session is a learning opportunity and the personal transformation at the end of eight weeks is nothing short of extraordinary.

As you’ll see in the note addressed to the ALC staff, the YLP students were certainly one of the highlights of the visit by cabinet members of School District 535.

The YLP is a volunteer effort and has been an ongoing partnership with Ms. Rojas over the past six-years. Members of Rochester Chamber Toastmasters and other local clubs volunteer their time each week to create a meaningful hour of learning and in many cases, life changing challenge and fun.

YLP Graduation Time!

Congratulations to our Youth Leadership Program students at the Rochester Alternative Learning Center.

They presented us with a plaque that sums things up nicely. We’re so glad to have a chance to help them learn the basics of communication and leadership.

We thank them for taking risks, being brave and letting their fellow students know a little more about them. It means being willing to be a little vulnerable, but with every chance to speak, and each learning moment, there is growth.

We hope our graduates will continue to take the skills they’ve learned and use them to have more effective conversations with classmates, parents and even employers.

We have a feeling they’ll be able to express themselves even better than when we held our first session early this fall.

Thanks to instructor Beth Rojas for making sure everyone was ready on a weekly basis and to our co-facilitators from Rochester Chamber Toastmasters: Nhien Chau and Jeff Burns.

Thanks as well to the other Toastmasters from the Chamber club, other area clubs and to Division F Director Dave Pearson who lent their talent to make this a powerful and informative group of YLP lessons.

Together we can make a difference and YLP is a first step to creating better speakers, leaders and hopefully future Toastmasters.

Prompt # 2 What had you learned about environmental leadership

One important thing that has been in my mind for all this time since the first lesson of this program is that knowledge is the key that opens the door of people's motivation. An example of this is that we always kept saying that if we teach the people how to recycle they will do it and even better they will be motivated to do it. But if we do not provide any information to our community about recycling and how this will help us to live in a better place, even if they have the most attractive trash cans in the world, they will not recycle.
