Blog entry 2: YouTube Kids: not so safe as it sounds

Keeping children occupied with your smartphone or tablet: it’s every parents’ trick. Unfortunately, these little ones easily find their way to YouTube clips that are not intended for children’s eyes. For this reason, YouTube came up with a new idea: YouTube Kids.

YouTube Kids wants to offer an answer with child-friendly videos and parental controls. Their motivation behind this platform is that the internet has to be a fun and educational place for children. VRT.be specifies that YouTube Kids leads children to adapted videos. It’s actually a child-friendly version of the large YouTube, with educational and relaxing videos and music. “The free app for children aged 3 to 12 works with profiles according to age. A separate profile can be created for each child”, says Michiel Sallaets of Google, the parent company of YouTube. But what if this platform that advertises itself to be a safe place for children 12 years old and under isn’t that safe after all?

YouTube Kids turned out to show some gaps. For example, there were stories about lullabies on which images of violent games were mounted. Apparently, the general “child filter” did not stop everything that is not intended for children’s eyes. A research conducted by Dr. Free N. Hess confirmed this. Her research led her to a horrifying world where people create cartoons glorifying dangerous topics and scenarios such as self-harm, suicide, sexual exploitation, trafficking, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and gun violence which includes a simulated school shooting. All of these videos were found on YouTube Kids, a shocking discovery to say the last.

Dr. Free N. Hess argues there has to be a better way to assure this type of content is not being seen by our children. Let’s come together and find a solution, so the internet can again become a safe, educational and fun place for children!
