'We are moved by tremendous show of care and support' (video)
SUBANG JAYA, Oct 21, 2014:
It will be a Deepavali to remember for K. Sarasvathy Thevi , the 39-year-old who looks after 22 children, thanks to Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M).
The children were brought to Pasaraya Mydin in USJ Subang Jaya this morning to shop for new clothes, shoes and essential groceries for Deepavali.
Sarasvathy, her lorry driver husband and mother-in-law, together with the children, live a cramped lifestyle in their current home, a rented single-storey house in Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya.
Only six are Sarasvathy’s own as 11 of them are her brothers’ children, while the remainder are orphans or children who were abandoned by their parents. The children are aged between 20 and two.
The family’s plight caught the attention of YR1M shortly after it was reported in The Rakyat Post recently and it offered to bring the children for shopping.

YR1M chief executive officer Ung Su Ling said their contribution pales in comparison to what Sarasvathy and her husband had done for the children.
“We hope that this small contribution of ours will be able to bring them some comfort during this festival of lights.”
The children said they were “so grateful” and were beaming with smiles as they shopped for new clothing and groceries.
Among the siblings is 18-year-old L. Vasudevan, who thanked YR1M for its concern and support.
“It was just wonderful. The last time we had a chance to visit a shopping mall was a year ago.”
Apart from YR1M, Sarasvathy also expressed her gratitude to The Rakyat Post readers and the public for making this the most memorable Deepavali for the children.
“The generous public had been bringing groceries and other household essentials to us these last few days.
“We are really moved by the tremendous show of care and support.”
