My favorite of the Moon Fam headcanons I have is that Sariatu jumped ship when she realized she was pregnant with Kubo- just straight up disappeared into the night- but it took her father and sisters almost a year to a) realize that she was actually missing and b) figure out where she went.
Think about it. Kubo is twelve, but his aunts describe his mother’s betrayal as happening eleven years ago. So either Sariatu successfully concealed a baby (unlikely) or her sister’s didn’t realize she was really gone for realsies until they tracked her down and found her with a husband and a midsized infant holed up in a cozy, magically-protected fortress.
They thought she had just gone for a really long vacation or gotten kidnapped, but nope, she actually abandoned them because she was knocked up. Imagine how ridiculously upset they must have been when they went looking for their missing sister and learned that not only did she leave them of her own accord, she didn’t even have the decency to write a note or something explaining her absolute betrayal of every value they held dear. She just... left.
Okay, now it’s sad, but still. As far as they were concerned she just dropped out of the universe. They probably had no reason to expect she was in fact shacking up with a former assassination target, not if she hid it so well that only an unplanned pregnancy could make her show her hand. They must have been so shocked when the finally found Hanzo’s castle.

While I’m awake, Sariatu in Kubo is a fairly obvious reference to Buddhist stories about tennin and tennyo, beautiful heavenly beings who play music and wear ornate robes, and serve the enlightened beings of heaven. In one story a tennyo whose feathered robe gets stolen cannot return to heaven without it. Sariatu’s equally heavenly Sisters notably wear feathered capes.
There are multiple things I’m getting at here.
First, backstory Sariatu in a gorgeous feathered cape, flying through the heavens.
Second, someone should do the Kubo rewrite of the Hagoromo.
Third, I’m ninety percent sure the Sisters can play music.
I might be one of the only people in the Kubo fandom who firmly believes that Sariatu never dressed like her sisters, but rather that before her betrayal, they dressed like her. Long flowing robes, layers and layers, lots of silk that spun around them as they flew. Slightly more subdued colors, of course, but still all the splendor expected of the children of the Moon. I like the idea of all three of them, lovely and cold in their ridiculous robes and flat white masks, looking more like actors then fighters until they had you at swordpoint.
Plus, it means the Sisters’ fashion choices for the last twelve years are essentially an angry proto-goth rejection of everything they once admired about her, the grace and softness and deadly beauty. Their anger and mourning might be subtle, but it’s there all the same, and just like all teenagers they’re communicating it through dark clothing and lots of rarely repressed rage. 99/1 they’re wearing black eyeliner under those masks too.
A couple of things I noticed after watching Kubo for the 100th time I noticed Kubo falls asleep with little Hanzo in his hand and the second picture is just the look on kubo’s face after Yukami says you have been together all this time and you haven’t even realized.
Yukamk headcanon
I think Yukami would be genderfluid because when I first created them with my friends' ideas we came up with them being a he/she. Basically, one day they'll be genetically a boy, maybe the next day or a week after, genetically a girl. But that kept getting confusing when I would try rping them and not everyone uderstood So i sorta started just saying, yukami is a girl. But now that i think about it, they would most likely be genderfluid (also i learned more about what that means so yea), only they mainly choose being a girl most days and on some a boy. So yea, that's my little headcanon for Yukami.
