I saw the other ask about what colours you dream in and I'm curious about something myself! How often are you able to lucidly control your dreams? And what are some recurring themes you often have? (Sorry, I'm incredibly interested in the workings of dreams heheh)
Dreams are pretty awesome :P Dream logic is one of my favourite things. Waking up legitimately worried about your ostrich egg patch.
How often are you able to lucidly control your dreams?
It depends on what I'm dreaming about! When I have the patience, I can actually induce a lucid dream by going into sleep paralysis first and then falling into a dream already aware that it's a dream. However, a majority of my lucid dreams are tipped off by clues in my dream. For example, I can't read logical time in dreams, so if I look at a clock and it's telling me it's 34:15, I think "huh, that's not right, I must be dreaming" and suddenly I can act lucidly. Sometimes I'll just stop in the middle of doing something in my dream and think "I'm dreaming" and then I look around the place like "YOOOO I'M GONNA FLY" and I do, because as soon as I'm lucid the first thing I do is fly :P So yeah, depends on if I spot my dream triggers or not (clocks, handwriting, driving etc. I say driving because I either can't drive in my dreams, or I'm uncharacteristically reckless when I do).
And what are some recurring themes you often have?
In a vast majority of my dreams, I'm always some sort of rebel leader or something, which is awesome. Usually it's combined with elements of whatever I've been reading or looking at that day - I'm the leader of a group of survivors in the zombie apocalypse, I'm the head of some newly formed Foundation-esque organisation, something like that. But usually I have a lot of control over something serious, and I'm generally pretty competent at my job, though another recurring theme is things going wrong. I'm having to deal with a raid or an infiltration or there's someone after me or something dramatic like that. It's also not unusual for me to actually die in my dreams - I've had some really graphic dreams where I've literally died and it's been really detailed, which is good for writing stories :P Usually in my dreams I'm pretty stressed from whatever responsibilities or authority I have, but I manage to power through it and get it done, even though I'm frequently morally questionable. Not as frequent, but frequent enough to get a mention, are nuclear explosions. I have a lot of dreams where I know one's coming, or there's a lead up, or I'm watching the explosion come towards me and I know there's nothing I can do. These are pretty unnerving but still kind of cool. On occasion, I'll dream not as myself, but as a character, which is very useful.
