My favorite Ulumi moments, pt. 1

This was an anonymous ask but I needed to make it a whole two posts because it's me. This one has 20 moments, exactly 30 images, and covers Garage Kids to the end of Season 2.

1.Garage Kids Starting strong! If you ask me, this is the picture that summarizes their entire relationship: they get lost in each other, realize they went too far, and pull back. Repeat.

2. XANA Awakens pts. 1 and 2 The sparring is a theme throughout my list, but I really do love how a pillar of their relationship is athleticism and helping each other get better.

3. Teddygodzilla Teddygodzilla is such an iconic episode, but I have two points for Ulumi specifically. First, YUMI'S OUTFIT! She got dressed up so cute for her date with Ulrich!! Second, they are just so soft and flirty with each other this whole episode! They're going to a dance together?? They're telling people about it?? Yumi hugs him and he looks at her like he's in love and asks if she's ready to return to the past?? I really feel like we had something going with Ulumi in Teddygodzilla that the writers just crumpled up and threw in the garbage right after.

4. Log Book "I didn't read it. I promise." "One day, I'll tell you about it." the YEARNING

5. Cruel Dilemma Yumi literally jumps into an evil tractor and shields Ulrich from harm with her body. Either she loves him or she has no sense of self-preservation. Or both.

6. Image Problem I almost didn't include this one but his dumb face just gets me. He literally never gets mad at Yumi for anything (even when he should) but then he's so offended that Yumi suggests he date Sissi? He's like, "that's not how our almost friends/almost lovers agreement works!!"

7. The Girl of the Dreams Ulrich was such a sweetheart helping her lug that giant suit of armor! And then he's just sitting and listening to her share about her project like a cutie!

8. Plagued Yumi really answered the phone like, "Ulrich?? uwu (✿˵•́ ω •̀˵)"

9. Swarming Attack This whole episode gets me. Ulrich got a letter 'from Yumi' saying she is in love with him and he takes all of a day to come around and say, "You know what? I love you too, let's make this work!" He was really ready to risk it all for her and she never even knew?? I don't know how he could recover from that. I would've just laid down and died I think.

10. Just in Time Please remember at the start of this episode, Yumi kicks him right in the head while they're sparring. Apparently Ulrich is into that though, because when Yumi gets a tiny cut on her hand, he races her to the infirmary and promises he'll be with her every step of the way for her recovery.

11. Laughing Fit We know her favorite flower is roses and that's what he brings herrrrrrr

12. Amnesia Yumi is the only person he gets memories of totally unprompted 😭 and the memories are sooo cute 😭

13. Routine ugh I wanted to skip Routine but look at their dumb little faces

14. Exploration She really looked us right in the eye and said she was in love.

15. Saint Valentine HE WROTE HER A POEM

16. Final Mix If the writers really loved us, they would've given us a Teddygodzilla 2.0-style Ulumi date here. Instead, we just got bad dancing.

17. The Chips are Down "Dear Mr. President, I'm writing to you about a girl named Yumi" 😭

18. A Bad Turn He's clearly pouting and she gives him the cutest, softest little wave 😭 AND THEN when the krabbes attack he rushes straight to her house because she's in danger protecting her family 😭 😭

19. Cold War "I need you"

20. The Key I really like how this scene mirrors the one from Teddygodzilla. Ulrich goes to Yumi's house, she's at the door, they're interrupted by having to save the world. Again. I don't know if the writers really meant all that, but this is a good place to say that, if xana had never been an issue, I think Ulrich and Yumi would have been dating (and maybe even broken up already?) by this point.

I don't know when part 2 will be done? I want to finish my re-watch first and who knows when I'll actually make it to the end lol

hahahaha Ulumi is a commune more than a pantheon

but gosh what a good question. I don't have an answer off the top of my head but I will use this as an excuse to talk about something that occurred to me recently:

I love love love love love how often we see Ulrich acknowledging how important Yumi's family is to her. He's the one that most often goes to her house and he's the one that she talks to about her family problems.

I think it totally makes sense that Yumi has a crush on Ulrich because obvious 'cute boy has crush on her' why wouldn't she like him back?

BUT one of the things that makes me really think they have staying power is that they really acknowledge each other's values, even if they're different (ie Ulrich hates his family, but he loves Yumi's because she loves them)

Times Yumi lets herself swoon when Ulrich isn't looking

Ok! Back on my bullshit of making super long posts about teeny, tiny details.

Today's argument: Yumi is crushing on Ulrich all the time, but for whatever reason (that's another post), she usually doesn't want him to know. This means that a lot of evidence that "we, the viewers" see unfortunately goes unnoticed by Ulrich.

Bummer for him.

Let's take a look!

I tried to keep these roughly in order? Also, I tried to stick with examples I had screenshots or gifs for. Let me know what I missed! Or other thoughts. I love chatting :)

Example 1: Episode 4 - Log Book

This is a super early example. (I almost included Teddygodzilla but that whole episode is a post in itself.)

So, we're starting here.

This is such a cute moment to me! She's so sweet and coy - "I didn't read it by the way...." and then she gets exactly what she's hoping for, which is Ulrich offering to share it with her one day!

(Side note: We never got that payoff?? Maybe if he had read it to her, we could've avoided a lot of the back and forth later on! Anyway.)

He moves like he's going to do something or say something, and she waits, clearly hoping he will.

But then he gets nervous and runs back to Odd and Jeremie.

Which is fine. They're babies. It's hard having a crush.

But THEN

She stays and watches him leave. She even takes a step like she wants to stop him or ask him to stay. But she doesn't 😭 Because that would be admitting she has wants and desires herself and that is not allowed apparently.

Example 2&3: Episode 22 - Routine

Routine actually gives us two goodies because of course it does.

First, we get the absolute classic line: "I'm Ulrich's girlfriend!"

Now, does she say it to Ulrich? The person she's upset with?

Of course not! That would be admitting her feelings to him. Instead, she tells her friends all about how she sees herself as Ulrich's girlfriend (presumably because she also sees him as her boyfriend.) This leaves no question in the viewers' minds that -not only does she have these feelings and want to be with him- she also acknowledges that they do have a special relationship!

This is such a sticking point throughout the whole show! But literally here she is in episode 22 admitting that she sees her and Ulrich's relationship as more than "just friends."

Even if she pretends differently later, her honest belief when she's too upset to lie, is that she knows she and Ulrich treat each other specially.

We also get this cute little moment below! The thing I want to highlight here is that Ulrich is watching her the whole time. Even when he "looks away," his eyes are obviously on her. He's not even trying to play it cool.

Yumi, though, actually looks away. It's so ingrained in her -even after she almost died- that she shouldn't be looking to Ulrich or letting him see her feelings.

Which is just absolutely insane. The girl is barely a teenager and you can tell how heavily the weight of everything hangs on her shoulders.

Example 4: Episode 29 - Exploration

This queen has the GALL to tell her parents that she is IN LOVE and then walk right up to Ulrich and not say a word about it to his sweet, clueless face.

So now we know she's in love, and her parents know, but there's no way she could ever tell Ulrich she even likes him.

Example 5: Episode 70 - Skidbladnir

This iconic scene.

I love this because Ulrich clearly has no idea what's happening. She's the one leaning on him, so he probably fell asleep first. And then we get this tiny little expression of "Aww" from her when she realizes he's still asleep.

But alas it's gone too soon when he wakes up and she has to hide her feelings again.

Who knows how long she would've stayed like that though? If he hadn't woken up? I really think she would've watched him sleep forever if she could.

Example 6: Episode 77 - Lost at Sea

This is another favorite of mine! @lyokosstuff had a really good post about this picture I'll link below too. Some good questions were raised: "Why this picture?" "What was happening?"

For me, the fact that she keeps a picture of him in her diary at all is the win.

Clearly, she's got big feelings. She's always had big feelings. And the only time she lets herself have them is in private where no one else will see it.

This could be a photo from a really cute moment between them, but I almost prefer the idea that it's a "bad photo" from nothing special and she still keeps it locked up tight. That means it's special because it's him and it's the only one she has.

Example 7: Episode 9 - How to Fool XANA

This is an Evolution example, so you can count it or not, but I just love Yumi's expression here. Ulrich isn't looking, he's focused on driving and not being embarrassed, so she's got the dreamiest look on her face and lets her head rest on him.

You have to imagine putting your head on a katana is not comfortable. But there she is, eating it up. She'd do anything for him.

Yumi's communication style

This is something I've been mulling over for a while - sort of the companion to the other Ulumi communication post I made a while ago.

My argument! Yumi's primary communication style is physical. She uses her words and actions too but I think the MOST HONEST insight into her ACTUAL FEELINGS is her physicality.

FIRST:

Teddygodzilla. She's so relieved that Ulrich was not crushed by a giant teddybear, she pulls him into a giant hug. I don't think she even says anything during this scene? Just a big ol' squish.

SECOND:

This is one of my favorites because it is SO CUTE! Episode 13 - Odd just gets done saying Jeremie is "working" with Aelita and they all have a laugh about how in love Jeremie and Aelita are....

And guess what she does next? It's the most grade-school "pay attention to me" maneuver ever! You KNOW she was thinking, "Jeremie is in love with Aelita = I wish Ulrich was in love with me." WHACK

Honestly, she's lucky he'll forgive her for anything because kicking him during a "time out" was a low blow, even if she's just trying to flirt.

Same thing here - "Race meeeeeee!" is just another adorable bid for attention from her crush

THIRD:

I'll combine the angy Yumi examples into one. The theme with all of these though is "BIG FEELINGS, no way to verbalize them." GOD FORBID she admits that she's jealous or hurt! Instead, we know she's upset because her feelings are showing through her body.

FOURTH:

This is also a combo because all these scenes prove my same point - she cannot just use her words with Ulrich?? She is ALWAYS touching him to emphasize her point.

In fairness, Ulrich doesn't always listen well. Or if he is listening, he doesn't always actually absorb what's being said.

This is sort of a chicken/egg thing to me? Was Yumi always a physical communicator or did she lean into it specifically to beat her messages into Ulrich's head? Who knows.

Here she is telling him to walk away, comforting him, waking him up, etc.

FIFTH:

Is this even a separate point? Idk she's just ALWAYS TOUCHING HIM. These are literally just a bunch of scenes I found while looking for other ones. There's so many! ffs how does Ulrich think she's not into him when she's always got at least one point of contact??

SIXTH:

Her solution to so many problems is to put her body on the line. This last point isn't even Ulumi-specific, just a general comment on her existence.

Jeez there's so many of these sometimes I feel like she was trying to die.

LAST, these were all from season 1. I didn't even go past episode 26 because I didn't have to. Also I got tired. But mostly because I didn't have to! All the evidence I needed was right there.

Anyway, what do you think? Wrong? Right? Missed examples? I'm curious to know what you think!
