False Lead/Jim conspiracy theory
I finally got to re-watching False Lead! It's one of my least favorite episodes, but I also decided that I believe Jim is a more complex, thoughtful character than we (me) usually give him credit for.
Whether you believe it or not, here is my argument that Jim was actually on the kids' side throughout the whole episode.
Evidence: He had the knowledge
Jim start this episode blatantly telling us that he was "in the Secret Service for a few years"! Personally, I choose to believe that there is some truth in all of his claims, so I do believe he was associated - maybe he interned or was a contractor for them once - so he clocked that these guys were bad news immediately! He didn't believe his kids had really done what they were accusing, so he decides then and there to volunteer himself as the errand boy so he can keep an eye on things.
Evidence: He sabotaged the mission
Jim intentionally did his job placing cameras and mics bad enough that it severely hindered the MIB, but well enough that they didn't suspect actual sabotage. He plays the fool this whole episode so they never realize what he's actually doing.
Evidence: He sabotaged the mission (again)
His next job is to plant a bug on Jeremie. It was really hard to get a screenshot of the exact moment, so just pretend you can see it, but he places the bug on JEREMIE'S BACKPACK. Not Jeremie himself. It doesn't actually make a difference in the events of the episode, but I choose to believe that Jim was hoping Jeremie would leave his backpack somewhere, like his room, and then continue on untracked.
Evidence: He tried to sneak the kids out
He doesn't like when the MIB take Jeremie to be questioned, but there was clearly no way for him to intervene without being obvious. Instead, he volunteers to go looking for the other kids by himself so he can help them get out before the MIB find them too.
Evidence for the evidence:
You might say, "Grace, that example seems like a reach. Why would you say that?"
Good question! I would say that because, a moment later, Ulrich knocks Jim out in one hit. Ulrich is great at martial arts, but I don't believe one kick would knock Jim unconscious, even for a few seconds. UNLESS! Jim was really caught by surprise. Why would he be caught by surprise? Because he was genuinely there to try to help Ulrich, not apprehend him.
Evidence: He was so ready to turn on the MIB
Last example for my theory! Jim turns on the weird MIB SO FAST. Honestly, everything would have made more sense to me if the MIB were possessed by XANA from the start, but whatever. Jim is clearly ready to rumble with anyone who goes after his kids. He just needed an excuse to do it overtly, instead of covertly, and here he finally does.
Thank you for listening! This is the end of my theory. I know it's silly, but I choose to believe the silly. I'm happy to take similarly silly questions and comments about CL conspiracy theories.
