They have to admit, they’re surprised. They never thought the Future Foundation would ever let them off the Island, let alone for an event meant purely for fun. Part of them wondered if it was some kind of trap, but if it was then they were really bad at it since most of the people working the various rides and stands were still dressed up in their dress shirts and stupid ties. That must be really uncomfortable.

Apparently, it was some kind of party being thrown for Naegi’s whole division, or something. They weren’t really paying attention because he had his shoes on the wrong feet the whole time and they were waiting to see if anyone else noticed. As far as they could tell, nobody did. 

Normally they would run off to the ice cream stand right away, but because they were the youngest, of course they had been left with someone on ‘babysitting duty’. They’d given up on convincing Hinata that they could handle this on their own. What, like they were gonna get kidnapped by one of the government agents in the middle of a crowded ass fair? It was annoying, but at least they could’ve gotten stuck with worse people. 

Speaking of which, they looked over their shoulder at Kaz, the unfortunate one who drew the short straw. They figured he didn’t want to be stuck with them, either, but they were also certain that they wouldn’t hear the end of it if Hinata found out they split up. Sticking by the pink-haired man was a superior option to sitting through a long lecture about everything that could’ve gone wrong.

“I wanna go on all the rides. Especially that one that spins around real fast so you get stuck to the wall. I threw up on that one once. It was gross.”

… They're more than a little excited.

The beach is quiet. The beach is nice. The ocean is one of the only sounds that’s still the same in every version of reality, fabricated or not. Easy to duplicate, they suppose.

Yuu-kun lays in the sand with their eyes closed, listening. The white noise calms them, lulling them further and further away from the world with the deep red sky and the feelings too big for them to handle right now. This was easier. Laying still in the light of the gradually setting sun and focusing on the ocean instead of anything else.

They wonder what Junko would say if she found them asleep on the beach. Probably kick them.

Their brow furrows and they huff out their nose. They aren’t supposed to think about that. They’re not supposed to think about her at all. Hinata said so. They still aren’t sure how to feel about his name change, but they’re smarter than to challenge the most talented person ever. 

… With one exception, of course. Keiko counts as the most talented person, too. But she was still a kid. Just like them. So it was a little different. They knew Keiko better than they knew Hinata, so she was easier to be around. 

As if she read their mind somehow, when they open their eyes they find her staring down at them, motionless. They hadn’t heard her approach, but that’s normal for her. They don’t startle, simply raising an eyebrow up at her. “Hey. Need something?”

They flinch when he shouts - quickly (and frantically) shushing him. This is supposed to be sneaky, goddammit!

“Shshshshhhhh shut up shut up shut up!” They hiss, looking around as if an undercover cop is gonna jump out of the bushes any minute now. They glare up at him like he’s the dumbest thing they’ve ever laid eyes on.

“First off, crimes is like, basically my middle name.” They’re half tempted to bring up those few years where their entire life revolved around nothing but crime, but they decide against it. It probably won’t help them convince him of what they want, anyway. “And second off, it’s not even that big a deal! Stealing’s like, the easiest crime to ever get away with. I steal all the time.”

They dig their teeth into their tongue as they realize they shouldn’t have said that out loud. He’s stupid - they can change the subject and get away with it, right? “A-anyway, Hinata’s hiding the good snacks in the pantry, I just know it! But there’s a lock and I don’t know how to get it open! Come onnn, I’ll even share with you!” Clasping their hands in a pleading gesture, they pull out their biggest, wettest, most pathetic-looking puppy-dog eyes.
