Also it should be said I got into Rebecca by watching Silo and other things she was in before I even got around to watching Mission, and then I liked Rogue Nation and Fallout enough that I went and watched ALL the M:I movies, which given I'm not a movie person says something, and I got into Mission in and of itself not just Ilsa (and also I wonder if some of the people claiming fridging have watched all the movies, because as a series it has its faults and it's definitely got more male characters than female, but it's actually really not the macho man dead wife every movie type of action movie series and all the male leads are fucking great, but I digress... then again I think one of the things with Ilsa's death is how it's framed as a choice Ethan has to make between her and Grace when they could've made it an "Ethan has to choose" thing with Ilsa and any other fan favorite, because in the latter case you'd never have anyone be able to claim they think it's fridging it would be clear that it's just a Choice (neutral)). But maybe because I didn't find her from Mission and I watched many other things in her filmography first it makes it a little easier for me to be objective about this. She was great in Mission. She's great in a lot of things. Ilsa deserved a better death but Ilsa dying made sense and Rebecca shouldn't be held hostage making movies she doesn't like the direction of her character in. It's fine it happens she did the right thing for herself by declining and is happy with that decision! Let her be happy and keep doing great work in other things.

The fact that Rebecca eventually came out and said that she was offered more of a role and declined tells me that probably she got tired of people harassing people in her name. She's doing great in her other roles now though, and she seems to enjoy having more creative freedom the way she gets to with Silo. She also said part of the decision was that she didn't like where McQ was steering Ilsa towards being just another member of the team. He wasn't gonna change that, and she wasn't gonna change her opinion, and neither one of them HAD to change anything. And if anything I wonder if some of the wonky writing with Ilsa had to do with that to a degree? Like maybe there was something else planned. We'll never know though but another reason that makes me wonder is because you go from the end of Fallout where she's kinda starting to get along with the team to her being rogue and on the run again in DR... just makes me wonder if McQ tried to give a little bit to Rebecca on her way out.

Either way though, this was a character death that while it could've been handled a lot better, makes sense for her exit to end in a death. Ilsa was in too many of the movies to just simply disappear like Jane Carter did. Brandt also disappeared, but while Fallout had high stakes too they weren't as high as DR. Plus I'm sure some degree of it is scheduling as in, Rebecca's contract ran out with DR and she declined to sign on for more, so it was easier/made more sense to give Ilsa a real ending than disappear her. And again, a fan favorite death made sense for this movie... even though they could've handled it better.

I never looked to see how Rebecca felt about Ilsa and Ethan but that's interesting. I know she did say she didn't like the idea of Ilsa just becoming one of the team and maybe that was part of it.

Also as great as Rebecca is as Ilsa, she's got so many great things recently that she wouldn't have if she'd decided to stay on Mission forever for the sake of those fans. Silo's really solid and she's fantastic in it, and because she has more freedom as an executive producer of it you can tell that she's happier than she would've been if she'd taken McQ's deal for more Mission. If you're ever into post apocalyptic sci fi I'd definitely recommend Silo.

As an Ilsa fan what I don't get about people demanding to know when she'll be back is that Rebecca wanted out. Like. I don't like everything about HOW Ilsa's death was handled, but WHY she died makes sense. That movie it made sense to have a fan favorite die and Rebecca Ferguson wanted out, so of course it was gonna be Ilsa? Yes they've had characters come back before but this is a case where that doesn't make sense.

And again, most importantly, Rebecca wanted out. She was offered more and declined. They didn't just decide "oh let's off Ilsa" out of nowhere, it was a response both to Rebecca declining to stay on for further movies and the plot of the movie itself making a fan favorite death to raise the stakes make sense. I get being sad because I am too, and as I said there are some things about the "how" that I thought could've been handled better, but she's dead. And it makes sense that she is. And I don't know how you can both be a fan of Rebecca and then demand Mission brings Ilsa back when it was Rebecca's choice to leave because she didn't want to do Mission anymore.

That probably makes you the most reasonable Ilsa stan out there lol. I love Ilsa to bits, I think her character is a billion times more nuanced than any Bond girl or whatnot, and Rebecca was a breath of fresh air to the franchise. But, it's as you said—as an actor she wanted out, and she has a few new projects coming out soon, like SILO for example, she's been in DUNE...

Overall, it's the Ilsa fans who butchered her characterization, they want her to be a "girl boss" next to Ethan, but the fact is, she's never needed Ethan in her team and she never will. She's a lone character who wanted out of the spy life, and when she finally understands that she can save someone, that she can be something other than a lonesome spy, well, she does so. And yeah, I hated how they handled her death, it was less than what she deserved, and also, I find Grace impossibly boring.

Nonetheless, Ethan and M:I aren't all about depending on Ilsa. Like you said, no it wouldn't make sense that she'd come back. Would it make sense for Jack to come back? Alan? No. Exactly. Brandt? Sure. Jane? Of course! Not Ilsa. Ilsa's dead and gone, but the Rebecca fans are blinded by their need to reshape their narrative to realize that.

Also I wouldn't be shocked if she was annoyed by the fact that Ilsa's being forcefully shipped with Ethan while she has been saying that she doesn't like it, and explicitly told McQ not to keep the kissing scenes in the movies because it felt OOC.
