So I have a Samsung hub that is used to talk to Z-wave device. I can see this lock and a Kwikset one on the app, but the Yale does something odd. When you change the state of the Kwickset one, it works and the app will tell you if it is lock or unlocked. The Yale, will change from unlocked to lock when you tell it to, but almost immediately the indication goes to ‘unlocked’, will the physical lock doesn’t change at all. I am not sure of why this behaves this way. Examing the Samsung smartthings log it shows “Locked” at a particular time and then immediately indicates that it is “unlocked,” at the same time as the first locked indication. So the actual state of the lock in really unknown. The Kwikset lock, in contrast, keeps track of its state.
I think this whole ‘smart home’ stuff is so much like Rube Goldburg construction. It seems like nothing works well with each other. I need to go off and find out what the difference between Z-wave and Z-wave plus and which my Yale lock has vs what the Samsung hub has.

My home is getting all together too smart or at least parts of it are. It seems to me that there are just too many different parts to it. For example, I have a Philips Hue hub and lots of smart screw in dimable white Hue LED lights. This works fairly well from the application from Philips and not bad from Apple Home. Alexa can work the lights by voice, but I always seem to have to argue with Alexa on how to pronounce the name of the light I want activated. The other problem that I have is that fixtures with two bulbs or more can’t easily be operated together. I don’t like having to name one ceiling1 and the other ceiling2 and having to tell Alexa those names one at a time. Hue supports something called zones, so I should be able to make a zone that would turn off both bulbs at the same time, but Alexa doesn’t support zones.
I have a smart door lock that I am evaluating, but it requires a Z-wave hub. So I purchased a 3rd genration Samsung hub. I was able to get the SmartThings app to find the hub using trial and error. The model number on the hub did not match one of the choices given by the app. I guessed that the more recent 2018 hub with the V3 in its name was the right one and it did find it with that choice.
Since I don’t have the Quickset door lock installed yet, I thought, what other parts should I be able to get the hub to connect with. I have a Samsung TV and Blueray player, but the application doesn’t seem to be able to find these. When it fails to find these things, it tells me to make sure that they are on the same network. And of course, I have to wonder if they are refering to 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wifi or wired ethernet. They are on wired ethernet, I believe. I might have to check the Blueray.
I am wondering about my ability to get all these things working together if I can’t even get a Samsung TV or Blueray player to talk to a Samsung HUB. It seems to me that there isn’t a good cental control to all these smart things. It is like no one wants their competitors products to work with their products.
I have a switching device that I will be evaluating that I may use to control LED shop lights. The shop lights have a power plug at one end and a power cord at the other end, so that you can link multiple shop lights together with one control. My thought is to be able to use this to turn on multiple lights in the garage or hobby room. I think that it should work since the switch is supposed to be good for 10 A and the lights are 55 Watts each. Two of them should be just a little over 1 Amp.
