Ace AIR: Rebecca Friedman and Zack Davis
Program: AIR Location: Ace Hotel New York Date of Stay: 04.27.16 Artists: Rebecca Friedman and Zack Davis
During their stay at Ace Hotel New York, artists Rebecca Friedman and Zack Davis created a six minute video documenting a performance and sound work. Friedman and Davis had arrived at Ace with a borrowed camera (”thanks, Jason” they say), a small dead tree, a few images, and ideas born from recent conversations about art, aging, and creative feedback with complex material phenomena. All this lead to the creation of Air, which you can view above and on our Vimeo.
Rebecca Friedman (b. 1994, Los Angeles, California) is a visual artist, writer and curator based in New York. She studied Fine Arts and Philosophy at Parsons School of Design and Eugene Lang College. Her practice centers around the idea of uncreative compositions that are expressed through spatial arrangements, sonic patterns, energetic impulses, affective intensities and micro-gestures. She has shown work at The Print Shop at MoMA PS1, Queens, NY (2015); Stream Gallery, Brooklyn, NY (2015); Otion Front Studio, Brooklyn, NY (2015); and Audio Foundation, Auckland, New Zealand (2014). Past curatorial projects include Still Working? at The New School in 2014.
Zack Davis lives in New York. Using a wide range of materials and techniques, his work explores formal and sensational qualities of thought in its interplay with the material world. His work has recently been shown at GCA and American Medium in Brooklyn, Bas Fisher Invitational in Miami, and at hotel-art.us. He is one of the founders of Appendix Project Space, an exhibition space that operated in Portland, Oregon from 2008-2013.
This March Ace AIR is curated by Joshua Caleb Weibley. Joshua is an artist and occasional curator based in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include “Colophon” at Veronica in Seattle, and “Cruft” at TRANSFER in Brooklyn.
