Dimetrodon by Zappi, found in a charity shop in May 2023 (incidentally on my way to the zoo, so it got to come with me.)

This one was originally made with a gaping toothy mouth, which isn’t my favourite design choice! I converted it into a cuter looking closed mouth.

Here’s how it looked originally. Very RAAAAAAAHH!!!! And overall a bit of a funny head shape for a dimetrodon.

Starting by unpicking the seams around the mouth…

Mouth inside removed, this looks really cursed I’m sorry.

Ladder stitching the mouth back together, and stuffing the stuffing back in as we go.

Shape is looking better already, but the head still looks pretty wide and round, with a rather big chin. To reduce that, I add some more ladder stitching under the chin to pull it inward…

Then some thread sculpting from one side of the head to the other in a few spots, to make it a little narrower.

I think it looks a lot nicer!

However, you might notice the mouth seam still looks a little wobbly here. The fabric on this one was quite thin and bunched up easily, which can make ladder stitches harder to hide. It can help to go over the seam a second time, seems to make it more sturdy overall and so a bit straighter. Also, keep the stitches as tiny as you can!
