ASUS is finally releasing the ZenFone AR onto the Verizon network, only a handful of days before we are expecting a slew of new ZenFone devices. The new device for the Verizon network is the ASUS ZenFone AR and it is already showing on the carrier’s website.
The ZenFone AR is the first device to support both Google Tango and Google Daydream technologies, which means for somebody wanting to experiment with the growing number of Tango applications, he or she no longer needs to forego having access to Google Daydream: the ASUS ZenFone AR will work perfectly when used in a compatible VR headset.
Google Tango is the technology that allows a device to sense its immediate environment. Devices use a mix of cameras and sensors that provide the software with visual and depth perception. Currently, there is a small number of Google Tango-enabled applications available in Google’s Play Store, but this number is steadily increasing. The ASUS ZenFone AR joins the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro as the second device with Tango technology onboard, though we know that Lenovo is working on follow-up Tango-equipped devices.
In terms of device specifications, the ASUS ZenFone AR is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, backed up by 6GB of RAM. Verizon is only stocking one storage option and it’s 128GB, which should give the device plenty of onboard space for media and applications. For customers needing more space, the device includes a microSD card slot, which supports cards of up to 2TB of capacity. There’s a 23MP main camera and an 8MP front-facing camera, a 5.7-inch, 1440p or QHD resolution AMOLED panel complete with ASUS’ proprietary VisualMaster Tru2Life technology, and a 3,300mAh internal battery, which uses USB Type-C. The device runs Android 7.0 Nougat under ASUS’ skin and although it’s a Verizon exclusive, the device supports GSM and LTE technologies in over two hundred countries around the world.

As far as pricing goes, Verizon is selling the device for $648, or $27 a month for two years, plus a one-time activation fee of $30. You can pre-order it now. This is a little more expensive than the US unlocked price, which starts at $599 for the 6GB RAM, 64GB variant, and rises to $699 for the 8GB RAM, 128GB storage model. 部機雖然叫 AR，但其實石先生最想試嘅係 Project Tango。Project Tango 手機同一般可以玩到 AR / VR 嘅手機最大分別係佢有一枚「深度感應器」。佢可以直接感應到距離，將手機與物件之間嘅距離測量出來，而係 Project Tango 最初展示嘅時候，也都係以感測距離為主。
手機可以感測距離有幾重要呢？一直以來，手機鏡頭雖然可以拍攝，可以利用光學原理一定程度上感測到物件嘅遠近，但即使用到雙鏡頭去計算，結果同真實距離有好大差別，而擁有深度感應器就可以真真正正計到兩個點之間嘅距離，可以構建一個立體空間，真正做到切切實實嘅 AR。 (more…)
