It’s the 50th anniversary of the first earth day!
Here’s a few reminders:
1. Opt for clear plastic when possible. Recyclable items with colors are more likely to be sorted into landfills
2. Wishful recycling is bad for the environment. You have to rinse recyclable items that interacted with food. This can lead to soiled items that end up in landfills
3. Remember Reduce, Reuse, Recycle? Do it in that order!
4. Compost, compost, compost! Do not throw items that can be composted in the trash (coffee grounds, egg shells, banana peels are some examples of compostable items!)
5. Many people doing zero waste imperfectly is better than one person doing it perfectly! Some easy swaps you can make to reduce waste is: using beeswax wraps to cover bowls, bread and cheese, using the plastic tubs that deli meat comes in as Tupperware, using reusable bulk bags (when quarantine is over), using non salted pasta water to water your plants, and eating sustainable foods!
Like schoolhouse rock says, “knowledge is power!”
