Buildings that lead the way
As the growth of low-energy buildings booms, the idea of structures that lead by example becomes less theoretical and more tangible. These buildings, along with their accompanying data and case studies, have the potential to become seeds of change.
Take, for example, University of California, Merced. According to the California Institute for Energy and Environment website, UC Merced is “become a living laboratory of sustainability, where every major building is LEED-certified. Its early efficiency goals met and exceeded, the campus is reaching higher: aiming for zero net energy for its buildings and vehicle fleets by 2020. Simply put, UC Merced is proof of what’s possible, with vision, technology, and smart planning.”
The way of the visionary building seems to be reaching for the high hanging fruit—zero net energy. Once considered highly impractical to construct, net zero is becoming an achievable goal. In an exciting new research report published in January of 2014 by the New Buildings Institute, lead authors Cathy Higgins and Amy Cortese point out that leading design firms, companies, schools, foundations, and governments are taking note of zero net energy (ZNE) buildings. “In just a few years ZNE has transitioned from an impossible concept to a quite probable future,” they write. “ZNE buildings have now moved beyond a handful of small demonstration projects by universities or nonprofits to more widely mainstream building types and sizes.”
Here are two important highlights of the report:
More than one-third of all ZNE and ultra-low energy buildings are in California. An aggressive state policy, utility programs, and leading high performance design firms all support the common goal of intelligent design and sustainable energy.
Dovetailing nicely with the passage of Prop 39, education comprises the largest portion of ZNE projects, with kindergarten through 12th grade (K–12), universities, and general education buildings representing about one-third of all ZNE buildings, closely followed by offices.
Net zero buildings capture the public’s imagination in a way that percent-better-than-code goals don’t. A common percent goal, for example, is to restrict the energy efficiency of most commercial construction to at least 50 percent better than current code requirements. Net zero is absolute—and makes for a clearly definable goal that makes people take notice.
Case studies and data sets on ZNE buildings do more than merely educate—they encourage people to aspire to a low energy use building that goes beyond even conventional recommendations.
The New Buildings Institute considers one of its priorities to increase the amount of easily accessible and public information and case studies on the design, technologies and energy data from buildings striving for very low energy use. The institute has created an extensive Getting to 50 database, a summary of high performance building characteristics, and a number of inspiring ZNE case studies.
At the end of each of its more recent case studies, New Buildings Institute has inserted a smart subhead called “Lessons Learned.” Our favorite lesson to date: “Set high goals. They can be achieved.”
