Darach’s worst heartbreak was realizing Ser Gilmore had betrayed him. He never believed in miracles, but surely he and Roderick both surviving the attack on Castle Cousland and escaping together had to be the closest thing. To learn it was planned, that he'd given up their location to Howe's soldiers, that he was willing to throw away their years of closeness for a chance at more gold, it devastated him. Having spent all his life in the castle, Darach had little time around men his age, and little interest in the sons of nobles who were more attracted to his bloodline than to him. Roderick was his first relationship, if they could call each other that, and the loss cut deep.

Zevran, though, is different. Darach doesn't want to admit it. Doesn't want to think about how often he catches himself smiling around him. That the warm feelings are something else. That it can't happen again, not again. He wants to believe he's content to keep waking each morning, though it hardly seems worth it anymore, if only for another chance to see him. He speaks in a much softer voice around him, something he can't hide from any of their companions. Zevran notices too, and it both delights and terrifies him.

OH the parallels between Darach finding his second love in Zevran and having to fight and kill his first love Ser Gilmore when he betrays them vs Zevran allowing himself love again in Darach and being forced to fight and kill Taliesen rather than rejoin the Crows...........
