Yeah it's not new, he's said it for years, it's been his Underdog Story throughout his solo career. It's wild to me that Zayn leaving so abruptly didn't prepare him for the inevitable but I guess he was in the eye of the storm at the time. Hard to think clearly.

He says it was around the time he was finally finding his place in the band (maybe as a quatuor that even helped?) and when everything's getting good for you, you don't usually start thinking about catastrophic scenarios. So yeah I can imagine he was blindsided. Who knows what they were told when Zayn left, too. I'm sure they were told they could and would continue no matter what.

Louis also clearly says he had never thought of going solo, it was the band or nothing. They were at the top of their game so why would it all come crashing down suddenly? It must have been so horrifying.
