He skates through as a wanderer, faking his way into jobs until something else catches his interest or blows up in his face- whichever comes first. The trouble that's found him *now* is the fact he's accidentally stowed away on a pirate ship and the only way to not get himself killed is to work off a now-debt to the captain. It's fine! He's fine.

From the story I've had explained to me I probably could've spun something about him genuinely accidentally stumbling back into a fated cycle or whatever, but during the entire basegame (at Least) he doesn't say no to pretty much any assumption of help or hero made of him, and his web of lies snowballs at mach speed before he can find any kind of Out.
