...What was this, a magical girl show?
Zoe Mortimer (Ragazza Magica Requiem)
Zoe's Past
Zoe Mortimer was born out of wedlock while her parents were still in college--Sanctum Community College, to be exact. They moved into a small, but homey house in Old Sanctum, eager and ready to start their new lives with their tiny daughter. All was peaceful.
Except for the fact that Zoe's mom was a magia.
Yep, that's right. Zoe's mother, Mitsuki, was the previous incarnation of Princess Morana, and in turn Persephone (Morta is unique to Zoe). She, along with Angelique and Trinity's mom, Bebe, protected the city from daemons, witches, and warlocks, with Cerberus leading them. Zoe's father, Stephen, had no idea.
Mitsuki was Japanese American; her parents had come from Japan to America.
It was apparent from an early age that Zoe wasn't exactly normal. She seemed to mature more quickly than other children, and she had a unusual "imaginary friend" she called "Grimme". Her parents were troubled by her behavior, and had her taken to a psychiatrist when she was five. But she was never diagnosed with anything, seeing as she was so young.
In Kindergarten, Zoe's only friend was Grimme. The other children were frightened by her. She drew strange things, talked a lot about her imaginary friends, and had a scary tendency to have dramatic mood swings. These mood swings made her into what seemed like a totally different person--cruel, vicious, dark, rude, and sometimes even violent.
In first grade, Zoe was finally introduced to Angelique, in hopes that Angelique would influence her to become a better person. This worked to a certain degree. Grimme was less of a center of Zoe's life, though "he" was still prominent. However, Zoe still had a tendency to have her mood swings around Angelique, and almost ruined their friendship at one point. Once she went back to her "normal" self, she felt remorse and all was well. After that, Zoe began to gain more control of herself, and Grimme began to disappear.
Zoe was always quiet, though she was a very sweet child when she wasn't in one of her "moods". She still was odd, but was still very typical for her age. Sometimes she would behave as a child shouldn't, but as the years went by it happened less and less. But Mitsuki and Stephen still felt down, deep inside, that there was something wrong with their daughter. Other children still didn't like her that much. She still scared them.
Angelique was secretly envious of Zoe. She wished she could have her parents all to herself, and that she could get everything that Zoe got. At times, Angelique would be mean to Zoe, and Zoe would have one of her moods and be awful right back. These fights were common, but they always went back to everything like it was perfectly normal.
However, everything changed when Zoe's parents were murdered. Zoe was absolutely traumatized, scarred for life. Grimme came back as she struggled to keep her sanity, grasping at straws. Eventually, a strange incident happened that is kept secret by the police even to this day involving Zoe.
She was put in a foster home, where she was abused, though Grimme never came back. She struggled, beginning to slip away, eventually attempting suicide, which she miraculously survived.
Angelique secretly was happy that Zoe needed something from her.
You pretty much know everything else.
"Grimme" is the Reaper, her second self. Zoe has a type of Split Personality Disorder, which is the curse of the royalty of Tenebrae. Mitsuki never had it because she wasn't "the one", aka the one to become Mahakali. Currently in the canon, she is control. Though the more she falls into despair, the weaker she becomes and the stronger Grimme becomes. It's not pretty.
Aha
Ahahahahahaha
HOW'S THAT FOR AN ANTIHERO
Trivia: Even though Zoe is in control, the Reaper still is inside her. The Reaper will often give her dark, murderous thoughts. I suppose the whole Reaper deal could be considered a kind of Split Personality Disorder. There's Zoe/Princess Morana/Morta/Persephone/Mahakali, and the Reaper. You will see this evident throughout Requiem. The farther she slips into despair, the more powerful the Reaper becomes inside her. And yes, in Requiem, there will be a point where the Reaper takes over. Zoe has always been like this, she just never realizes it until later on.
Okay, so this is totally Wes and Zoe's song.
Though half of it only fits them probably in Revelation, when their relationship takes a turn to being more... physical. Their ship is pretty innocent.
Aha
Ahahahahahaha
*cough*
I don't think I have to explain why. The words should be self-explanatory.
Hope you're ready for feels.
This is pretty much Zoe's song in Requiem.
She's already broken when you meet her, but as time progresses, she slowly begins to unravel.
She eventually gets to the point where she feels... dead inside.
Even after the arc dedicated to her, she doesn't fully... recover from the incident.
Basically it just takes one final trigger to truly break her and unleash the Reaper. There may be a point where this actually happens, I'm not sure yet.
This is where the Power of Friendship (and Love) comes in, of course. Without her friends, she would not have been able to make it all the way to the end, or be able to face the Dragon. And that's how I bring in some traditional aspects of magical girl works.
Trivia: Zoe, thanks to her heritage and magia forms, has the greatest connection to Beelzebub. She will always have some sort of "affinity" for him. She is also the only magia to have the same powers as a witch, which explains the connection to Beelzebub. She could pass as a witch rather easily.
Okay so I was going through my Skillet songs and came across this one.
It... pretty much fits Zoe.
I've been thinking about the emotional/philosophical side of Requiem, and this song fits her later on once things start getting really bad.
Zoe's pretty strong thanks to everything she's been through, but she's human, and she can still break.
And when she breaks, she can possibly become "the Reaper" which is an entity entirely different from any daemon or witch. It's basically the Grim Reaper. She's Death, after all. The Scythe of Demise seems like it's a good thing, since it can reap daemons, but until it transforms it's technically evil. The Reaper is basically unstoppable.
The Reaper is important to the plot of Renaissance.
Anyways, Zoe constantly struggles, and eventually she does feel dead inside.
I keep on forgetting about the emotional side of Requiem, the real deconstruction side, so this song suddenly reminded me.
