there is this book, "the encyclopedia of weird creatures" and i have the Finnish copy so. My favorite creatures from it i guess lmao, roughly explained what they are but no full translation of the texts
The tongue eating louse is a parasite that attaches to a fishes tongue, sucking it dry and as the result, the fishes tounge dies. Usually found in California but also seen in Britan.
The new Zealand batfly. Literally a fly that decided to avoid bats by not having wings. It is tiny it walks on the ground but it's a fly. But it can't fly.
My personal favorite, the bone-eating mucus flower. It is not a flower, is is a zombie worm. It lives in the bottom of the ocean, and when a dead animal has no flesh anymore, it eats the bones. They look like flowers sticking on them. Also, the females keep the males INSIDE THEM so they can just SPLURT OUT eggs that will grow into more zombie worms. Their amount has decreased significantly because of the decrease of whales.
Velvet worms. This is actually a direct transition from the book because it's so hilarious: "A multi-legged, tuxedo-clad velvet worm slithers through the forest. When it finds an innocent victim, it rears up on its hind legs and sprays sticky goo everywhere like a primitive version of Spider-Man. The victim gets caught in the sticky threads, and the pathetic velvet worm gets to inject its prey with poisonous saliva and enzymes that dissolve its internal organs. It then bites its victim in a convenient spot and gobbles up the delicious entrails into its mouth - wonderful! After a delicious brunch, it carefully eats the spread goo and uses it again to prey on its next unsuspecting victim. It is no coincidence that the velvet worm and spiders have similar eating habits. Scientists initially thought that the velvet worm belonged to the earthworm family, but it turns out that the creature is much more closely related to spiders."
Portuguese man o' war. Is not one animal. It's a bunch of smaller creatures that decided to form a body to work together. Alone they're useless, together stronger. Multiple useless creatures in a trench coat, made of 4 different types creatures, and together form a shape like a warship. Some work as the Ship's sails, hunter ones, the ones that digest hunted food, and even ones to reproduce. They would suck alone.
Zombiefly. Fly that eats ant heads. That's it.
the black swallower, literally swallows other fish 3 times it's size. I like it cuz it looks funky
Cookiecutter shark. Looks like a tadpole, has sharp teeth, really funny looking guy.
Leafy seadragon. Looks like plant. Like seahorse male gets preggers. Is veeery slow.
Olm. They're blind and their skin is the same stuff as our tongue and they live underground. Basically they are big living tongues that constantly taste the soil around them. It can live to over 100 years. That's a long time to taste soil. It can live 6 years without food.
Brown basilisk. They walk on water, like Jesus supposedly. They also look cool.
Gavial. Just look at it. It looks hilarious. Also they literally eat anything.
cassowary. They jump on their prey, Run around, and kill them with their brutal claws. Closest we are to dinosaurs. It can jump 1.5 meters and on their 2nd toe they have a 12-cent long claw. They've only killed one human though.
Vampire ground-finch. Literally birds that very sneakily drink blood of other birds.
Kākāpō. Useless bird, fat, lives on a remote island near new Zealand. Can't fly and has no defense system because they didn't have natural predators before humans came to their island. Easy prey and at the time of making this book there was only 100 left. I love it
pink fairy armadillo. They are good Digger and look silly. For defense, it just jumps high.
That's my favorites bye
