Zombie Stage and the Potential Themes of Spectacle (Also theorising Hyuna's role)
An interesting thing I've seen people point out is that Hyuna has a car, Dewey is face timing etc. We are probably safe to assume at least some humans in this world are uninfected (whether this is just a few people or the majority, it's hard to tell from the teaser, though they point out that the "underground world" is illegal).
Now I feel ALNST has always been quite explicit that the aliens/guardians are kind of representative of those at power in the idol industry. Hyuna is rebelling as a part of it - she's survived being harmed by this system.
But that doesnt seem as much the case in ZOMST, where she seems to have some kind of authority role? It makes wonder if this is a bit more explicit in showing the cruelty of humans to other humans (although I still think the aliens are supposed to be somewhat representative of the megarich/talent managers/corporations)
It's literally a circus theme, and the history of ""freak shows"" and such has its origins in making a mocking spectacle of people's disabilities, ethnicities, gender identities etc if they didn't fit social norms (while I'm not citing specific sources, you can see this in a lot of what P.T Barnhum did).
There's also a lot to consider in Hyuna (and Luka) being explicitly disabled characters in Alien Stage itself. While I don't think the "infection" is explicitly a disability metaphor (honestly I could do a side rant on zombie movies and ableism), the implications of an entire "organisation" of some kind making a spectacle of an explicitly vulnerable group of people do resemble explicitly ableist practices (in both old circuses and modern TV shows etc). Hyuna is "separate" from Zombie Stage but I wonder if her character has a kind of earlier involvement/trauma from it still.
Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I wonder if we're going to see themes about the spectacle of othering and discrimination in this series. Of course it was present in ALNST, but I would argue that was moreso talking about the spectacles made of manipulation (and the relationship issues that come with that - the fact that those showing closeness in ANAKT Garden were paired in Alien Stage could be read into a critique of reality dating shows).
Just some thoughts, but I am very excited to see what this series explores. I have also seen other theories that this series will be more focused on the college AU, and that each episode will be essentially about films they're watching, so maybe this is just a one and done episode?
