I only just came across the term today and I'm kind of confused. Who/what are kahanists? I've seen a couple posts today by/about them, and a blog by one, and they don't seem like people I want to be around.

It was shabbat (and I am shomeret shabbat), so I only saw your message now. I know you’ve received answers to your post asking who they are, but a brief overview for those who don’t know:

Kahanism (Wiki page). 

The Kach is banned in Israel because of their ideology. 

Jewish Defense League (they are identified as a terrorist organization in some places, for example by the FBI in the USA). The SPLC has a page about them, where they are listed as an extremist group.
