also fucking we have NOT discussed the performance of justice smith in that film enough. what a fantastic job. he hits that sense of awkward confusion and dissociation so perfectly and it makes the scenes where owen actually lets how she feels show absolutely GUTWRENCHING in comparison. i was particularly impressed by his willingness to play every part of owens anguish (e.g. with the wheezing in the final scene). thank you justice smith i love you justice smith

so much of the horror genre is informed by the metaphor of queer/transness as monstrousness. especially emphasizing the amount of horror that depends on the audience's repulsion at seeing a human body changing into a new, other body. I Saw the TV Glow is about the horror of NOT transitioning. the horror of static. the horror of looking into yourself and being terrified of what you see. the horror of seeing who you are and choosing to do nothing about it. the horror of looking away. and by god is it terrifying.

GOD it's only just hitting me the genius of using a dark room as the place where Maddy leaves tapes for Owen. The in-between place you use after capturing something of the outside world. Where you process it, develop it, craft it carefully into the story you want it to tell, before you're ready to bring it back out, to show the world how you see it. How tenuous that space is.
