Online speed portraiture, @drawingisfree_org with the excellent Chloe Briggs presiding from Paris, providing the soundtrack by which means she times our poses, one track per model. We get through 12 to 14 volunteers sitters in an hour-long session, always in an atmosphere of warmth, camaraderie and encouragement. There are multiple such sessions run by various people, mostly in Europe and the UK, but this one stands out for offering a second weekly session at a different time the accommodates some other global audience better, and also for that atmosphere.

Drawing is free, fast and furious

Great online session last night, all tricky fingers and spectacles. Glasses are handy – the frames make a kind of secure reference point for judging the placing of features, lines and shadows. I decided to experiment with using harder pencils, since I usually end up covered in graphite and the high contrast can be a bit unsubtle. Didn’t think to bring my usual 5B–7B pencils to the computer, and once we had begun I didn’t want to go hunting. It did not go well. Didn’t look much different, but felt weirdly unfamiliar and downright clumsy. I sat out several poses, and struggled with likenesses more than usual.
