Althea Wilde was always considered a little bit odd, even among the free-spirited Jubilee Court. She didn’t want a partner, but she did want children, and it only took a little creative problem solving to bring Nick into the world. But even more importantly, she wanted to be the next Collector - the person charged with going into the human world to collect new stories as inspiration and warning for all the Arcadian elves. When the approval came through, she showed an un-elf life impatience to travel nearly immediately, bringing the 5 year old Nick with her into a land unlike anything she could have prepared him for.
Growing up, he made sure to keep his glamor up and keep his elf side hidden, because he had been raised on stories of the terrible things people do to elves. Life was hard, food was scarce, and without any kind of paperwork to establish their identities, it wasn’t long before Nick fell in with a street gang just to survive. But it was with this group that he found a home as well. He learned new games, he made friends, he got into trouble, but there was usually someone there to get him out again. The money he made supported them while Althea spent her days sitting in pubs and on street corners, listening to everyone she could and collecting every word of their story. Sometimes she would slip up and reveal her status as an elf, but if they moved to a different part of town, they could avoid the worst of the racist consequences. Mostly.
When Nick was a teenager, his mother sat him down and told him he needed to return to Arcadia. As much as she had loved getting to raise him, if he was going to fully understand his elf abilities and his heritage, he needed to return to Arcadia. There, his biological father and his husband would take him in and guide him through along with Nick’s half siblings who were close in age. It was one of the only times she had put her foot down and insisted on something, so Nick gave in although he wasn’t sure he wanted to go back.
Arcadia was difficult. Suddenly, the patterns of life and ways of connecting with people he had been raised around were considered wrong and marked him as an outsider. While his family did their best to help him adjust, it wasn’t long before the whispers of ‘corrupted’ started to follow him around. He stayed to keep his promise and he was able to master their magics as well as the mental tricks that were important to their culture. But the isolation and the casual cruelty overwhelmed him, and he made the decision to come back to the human world instead.
He couldn’t have known he was walking into the beginning of World War I.
Shocked and reeling from the experience, Nick closed himself off. Born of one world, raised in another, it had left him feeling like he belonged to neither. And if humans could be that cruel to each other, what more could they do to the Magicks they feared and didn’t understand? But with nothing else to do, Nick began to travel the world. His skills in illusion supported him as he conned as many rich humans as he could, taking petty satisfaction in that revenge. Whenever he had a new batch of stories, he would reconnect with his mother so she could take them back to Arcadia.
He did his best to avoid trouble, but he wasn’t always successful with that. After all, stay for a decade in one place and someone was bound to get mad at someone else and start some kind of fighting. Most of the time it wasn’t his fault when he decided to follow the wind to a new location. (Occasionally, he needed to leave quickly due to some…risky choices made in marks. But hey, no one could have perfect judgement all the time, right?)
But now he needs somewhere new to go and lie low for a little while after a deal went south, and he’s heard some interesting stories about Swynlake. After all, openly practicing Magicks, alternate universe dreams, college drama, and small town politics in one place? Sounds like the perfect place to hide and hear something new.
