Footprints of Change 足迹 👣 from 🥝 iQiyi and 🐧 Tencent announced an opening score of 7.1 on Douban. Starring Tong Yao, Ryan Cheng Lei, Liu Yijun, Jelly Lin and Rain Wang.

A few days ago, the production team announced that the drama received an opening score of 7.1 on Douban which was based on approximately 5K ratings. In general, a score of 7 and above is considered good.

Finally Cheng Lei is in a Production that Does his Skills Justice

For the first time since My Journey To You I get to experience Cheng Lei at his best as the male lead in Footprints of Change.

It’s a period drama he appears in alongside female co-star Jelly Lin, that starts out in the tense as hell Republican Era in Shanghai and spans three generations of love and life in the same house, in a time of China’s rapid economic, technological and cultural transformation.

Cheng Ao’s romance with his female love interest, Lin Si Yun develops in real time, and their assertive Doctor/ rebel Lawyer respectful friendship of equals which turns into romance is well paced and well balanced.

What’s also given quite nuanced and layered treatment is the way that women’s subordination changes, sometimes is strengthened and sometimes is weakened during times of national crisis and social upheaval.

I’ve had the occasional thought that there ought to be a bit more tension because of the era they’re living in but even without that the story is engaging and immersive enough that you just want to continue to find out what happens to this little family unit before the story enters a future generational story with another couple.

I’m only up to the first 9 episodes but I feel they’ve taken some interesting risks with this story and really demonstrate how morality and values do not come from within anyone’s DNA but from within the material circumstances that they’re living and operating within that shape their choices.
