The Road Trip [A Doey RP]
Continued from:
The Tamest Night of the Universe [A Doey RP]
From where we left off:
"There's probably a supermarket somewhere, we could stop in there for a bit." This was actually the kind of night she needed, a breath of fresh air with as few people around as possible. Even if it was with someone like Duncan, who had gone and defaced a guy earlier, it was still nice to be out and about, rather than hiding out at home like she had for the past couple of months.
Okay, seatbelts were fastened, mirrors were adjusted...she put they keys in ignition and started the car, carefully backing out of the driveway to the garage door. Within a few minutes they were off-at a safe driving speed, of course. She'd just recently got her license, no way was she going to jeopardize that! As they drove some easy listening came on the radio. "Would you rather listen to something else? I don't mind." Maybe listening to his favorite radio station would help Duncan loosen up. He seemed a bit irritated. 'Stop in there for a bit' did not sound like 'dash n go' not even remotely. And not only was Zoey driving like an old person, Owen's mom's music taste flooded the car. Some guy crooning that sounded like that Buble douche. This was pretty much torture. At her suggestion he flipped through the stations at a rapid pace, stopping on some screamo metal that he was about to turn up, just before feeling guilty again. He didn't even know why he felt guilty! She said to put on whatever music! But it was clear she was just too polite for her own good and she wanted to talk. He switched the radio back off again. "Nah, its okay. Silence is cool too." No it wasn't. Hanging around Zoey was making him lame.
Zoey didn't really have much of a specific taste in music, she mostly listened to whatever had a good beat or unique sound. But she'd never really tried screamo before, and as it blared into the car she knew why. The music felt angry, putting her on serious edge. But she did say for Duncan to listen to whatever, and pitting up with his music was the least she could do after all the nice things he was doing for her. But just as soon as it had come on, it was off, and everything went quiet. The metal had startled her a bit, and Zoey had time to catch her breath a little. She glanced at Duncan, turning to him as they stopped at a red light. "I want to thank you again," she said. "This has helped a lot." She smiled, probably the first really genuine ones she'd had for weeks.
He really wished he'd kept the music on. She was gonna kill him with kindness one day, she knew that right? Duncan let out another groan as if he were pained. Stop thanking him already! He looked out the window to the empty streets, she hardly needed to stop for that light. "Are you serious Zoey?" He pinched the bridge of his nose, leaning his arm on the door awkwardly. "Anyone would have done the same. You didn't ask for all that crap to happen and you certainly didn't deserve it." Anyone else on Total Drama deserved that crap more, especially a certain bitchy ex-girlfriend of his.
The light turned green, and Zoey started again. Was he upset that she was stopping? "If I ran that light, they could've taken a picture, or something," she said, pointing to the small camera above the streetlight. "I could've gotten us, or Owen's mom, in trouble." Duncan lived for breaking rules, didn't he? Well, that was one way that they were different-she didn't want to break rules just because they were there to break.
She smiled again at his response, only a bit more sadly. It had been absolutely horrible to deal with all of that, even after finally getting friends and even enjoying herself. "Well, you know what they say-better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all..."
"You needed to turn there," Duncan informed her way too late after her sucky reasonings for doing the right thing. But Duncan didn't mind if they drove aimlessly for a bit. Not now that she was being a Debbie Downer on his night and it was probably not going to get much better. But he had to deal with Zoey, he felt responsible for her in a way, even though it was entirely coincidental that he'd ended up at juvie with her boyfriend. "Oooh, Owen's mom. That'd be horrible." Duncan didn't hide his sarcasm. He laughed because getting Owen's mom a ticket was kinda funny. Her poor me response bothered him deeply. "Come on Zoey. Don't say that. It's not normal. Just, I don't know, be pissed about it or something."
Zoey sighed in irritation at having missed the turn. "Sorry," she mumbled. With any luck they could make it around in the next few minutes. Gah! She was a hopeless driver! Well, better her than Duncan-he'd had that drinking contest earlier, it would've been a risk she didn't want to take.
"Well, no one wants to deal with a ticket," she said firmly, starting to get a little irked by how insensitive Duncan was being. I mean, sure tickets weren't a big deal when it wasn't ykur car! But her attitude changed completely yet again, as she thought of last season. Images she'd pushed back into her memory came back suddenly, vivid and horrifying. "I wasn't mad," she said, starting to feel herself tense up. "I mean, I was a little, but mostly...I was just..." Miserable. Heartbroken. Betrayed. "...hurt." That sounded lame and flimsy, even to her, as soon as it came out.
"That's what makes it funn- you know, never mind." Zoey would never get why doing bad things could be wildly entertaining but that was just her. She was such a goody-goody. He actually found it kind of refreshing though. Duncan was worried for her, driving and talking about all this. Yeah, so Mal was evil. You get angry and move on didn't you? That's what he always thought had to happen. It was simple really. But Zoey wasn't going for it. She was hurt and she was going to hold on to those hurt feelings until she became some sort of a hermit, or so it seemed. "Feeling hurt isn't dealing with it," Duncan replied with a lot of irritation in his tone. "If you want to get him back..." Duncan would break her in to see him, it didn't seem like payback was lingering around though for the taking. "But I would have thought you'd gotten your payback already from winning the season..."
Finally, she was able to make that darn turn. Obviously she and Duncan had conflicting views on what was funny. Bit she wouldn't press the matter; it'd probably lead to a draining fight, which was the last thing she needed. As she thought about it, she wondered if that really was payback, or whatever. "I wanted closure," she said, finally coming up with what it was that bugged her. "I wanted to see Mike one last time-he wasn't there. I thought...I thought he'd be there..." Mal was the only one at the finale-there was no Mike, no Mike at all.
They finally made it to the supermarket, and Zoey parked the car, feeling the waves of what had tortured her for months, all the raw emotions from not receiving any closure, hit her at full force. A sob broke out, and as she tried to hold it in, another, followed by another, until her forehead was on the steering wheel and she was crying, weeping.
Duncan didn't know what to do. This run to the supermarket became infinitely more complicated. Not only was the dam-darn thing not even open but Zoey had started bawling her eyes out. Duncan hovered his hand over her back before deciding to put it down and pat her a few times. He rested his hand there on her back for a while, not knowing what else to do. Duncan knew Mike was still there... in there somewhere. And Mike (even though he didn't know much about the guy) wouldn't just give up on Zoey just like that. His face hardened. "Get out of the car," he told her. He was more sober now surely and he didn't feel too drunk to drive. "You want you're closure, we'll get you your closure." He was all about action, that was how he was going to do it.
She felt Duncan pat her back, and she suddenly felt guilty yet again. He'd never asked for any of this to be loaded onto him, and here she was, bawling her eyes out because she couldn't get over this whole deal with Mike-Mal. And of course, the stupid supermarket wouldn't be open-they'd been wasting their time. Suddenly, Duncan commanded her to get out of the car. What was he doing? He wasn't going to...actually take her to him, was he? She nodded, sitting up and trying to control herself so that she'd stop blubbering, then she opened the door and got out, walking to the passenger's side. She had an idea about what Duncan was planning, but she wasn't sure what he really was going to do.
Duncan was actually half surprised she did what he asked so quickly. He was used to chicks arguing with him and trying to get their own way. He knew Zoey wasn't like that and it actually kinda made him feel like the man - large and in charge. He slipped across to the drivers seat and started the car. "I've been able to handle drinking half my bodyweight since I was thirteen and its never slowed me down before." And if he got caught good, he'd have his rep back. "So I'm gonna take you to see him, even if we have to drive all night." Which they would. And he felt a bit guilty that maybe he was forcing this decision on her. "Do you trust me?" Not that he'd given her too much reason to.
"..." Zoey had no idea how to comprehend all of this, or what she was going to do. Here she was, in the middle of a different province, in some town she didn't even know at all at night, with a guy she'd only met on a gameshow about to go on a roadtrip to talk to her ex. Not exactly the place you wanted to be on a Saturday. Finally she got into the car, buckling the seatbelt and looking at Duncan. "Yes." He'd proven himself to have a heart of gold, and she honestly felt safe around him-there was no way she could go to...wherever it was that Mal was being held. With someone there... "I trust you," she said again, a bit more firmly. "Let's go."
Duncan stared at her, he expected her to trust him but it still made him realize how much he really wanted to live up to that expectation and it'd be easier for him if no one expected anything of him. Then he could surprise people. He knew disappointing her was probably inevitable now. "Okay," he pulled out of the supermarket carpark with a screeching of tires and stepped down on the gas. What would this even accomplish? Her boyfriend was still in there somewhere but how did you even draw him out? Duncan put the radio back on but turned it down low out of courtesy to Zoey. "You know," he said while drumming his hands on the steering wheel. "We're technically stealing Owens mom's car."
Zoey attempted to tune out the music on the radio, but its frantic tempo only served to make her feel anxious about this whole thing. She'd never seen Mike after the middle of the season, and Mal after the finale. Sure, she'd known he was locked up somewhere, but the real location was unknown.
Oh right...they were stealing, weren't they? She didn't know what to say to that-the fact that this could bery well be a felony. "Owen should be more careful who he lends his car to," she said, even smiling a little. Did she say that? Did SHE say that? Maybe this whole situation was bringing out an uglier side of her than she'd want.
Duncan looked at her and then laughed loudly. That was classic. She was just about as innocent as they came but he liked seeing her say that. And it made him realize just how attractive the girl in the passenger seat was. She was his partner in crime now, sorta, and it was oddly ironic (and oddly a turn on as danger usually was for him). "Now that's what I've been saying all along!" Duncan agreed. "Why does everyone see me as some kind of do gooder now? Is it like everything I'd done before has just been erased?" He rolled his eyes and focused on the road. Owen was stupid to trust him.
So, he was still incredibly sensitive about the whole new interpretation of his personality. Zoey honestly could see why-if you had built up a reputation for being a badass punk for years, suddenly becoming known as a nice guy could lead to serious embarrassment. "t might be because of the way they edit the show," she lied. She thought that under that edgy exterior beat a heart of gold, but it wouldn't be a good idea to bring it up now. "If anyone gets in trouble, it'll be Owen anyway. Neither of us might get any blame..." Part of her was enjoying the adrenaline from all this, which surpriswd her.
"Yeah, that must be it," Duncan agreed although doubt was still all over his voice. He was a do-gooder right now. He genuinely wanted to help out Zoey and it wasn't just to stop her from crying. His ego had taken a hit last season, he expected Courtney to still be pining over him and Gwen to be overjoyed to be on a team with him, but it seemed he was wrong. But at least people were still making Gwuncan blogs... well, Sierra. Owen wasn't really going to get in trouble, he never did. And they probably wouldn't either because Owen's mom would deem they had some kind of emergency which led to them taking the car. "Eh," Duncan shrugged and kept his eye on the road. Almost nobody was out here at this time but Owen was hardly right in the city. Duncan thought he knew what facility Mike would be at, and if he wasn't at least he tried right? "So what would you say? To Mal-uh- Mike if you saw him again?" Duncan was genuinely curious.
The question caught Zoey by surprise. What WAS she planning on saying to her ex-boyfriend? It had been something she'd mulled over often, when lying in bed and playing a scenario about their reunion-if they'd ever have one. Which it seemed highly likely, now that Duncan was at the wheel.
"To tell the truth...I don't know." That was wrong. "No-I mean, I've thought of what to say so many times, I just never had one thing set. As they made it onto the freeway, she leaned back, looking out into the night, trying to make one palpable speech. "I would probably ask him why he'd hidden for so long...who the real personality was...things like that." She sighed and moved her eyes to Duncan. "...then, I'd let him know how much it hurt, how...how...betrayed I felt! I'd want him to know that I was done with him, and that he'd ruined," she couldn't help but chuckle at the coming remark, "the best thing to have ever happened to him."
Duncan didn't know too much about it. All that weird multiple personality crap but from what he did know Mike probably didn't genuinely want to deceive Zoey. The Mike part seemed every part the devoted boyfriend. Zoey may have been being a little harsh. "Don't you think-" Duncan started, hoping she, like all emotional chicks, wouldn't take it the wrong way. "-that if Mike knew he would have told you? I mean, I don't get it myself but maybe he just didn't have any memories of what Mal did. It must be weird, all through juvie and to come out of it with a different personality in control and the memories gone." With Mal's power he couldn't have been willfully suppressing juvie, but the Mike part would have been. "I dunno. I guess I just feel sorry for him."
Zoey sighed, thinking back on Mike. Sweet, lovable Mike, the guy who'd instantly charmed her when they first went on the show. Maybe she was being a bit tough. "If Mike isn't there, I'll say that to Mal," she said finally, after some thought. "I really do want to see Mike one last time-if I get to, I'd probably..." What? What do you say to a guy like that-who'd been through Hell, and was most likely going through it again? "I'd ask if he did know, and if he did, why didn't he tell me." She could feel her eyes start to water up again, and when she blonked she knew she might start up crying again. "I'd ask if there are other personalities in there-and I'd...I'd...tell him that I loved being with him, and that I'm sorry, but we can't....be together-anymore..." Zoey stopped then, feelong herself starting to sob. No reason to make this car ride any more awkward...
Well, she didn't take it the way he thought she would, but she sure as heck was still emotional. Duncan was still pretty sure the personality known as Mike didn't know squat about what Mal had been planing but he wasn't going to push the issue in front of Zoey. She was already on the brink of crying. This was going to be a long car ride and suddenly Duncan felt all too sober. He tapped his fingers along with the music and gave Zoey the occasional glance. "Hungry?" He was.
Zoey had started to just look outside the window, calming herself sown so she didn't cry anymore. She hated crying in front of others-then they started to worry about you. But the idea of food brought her back to reality. Actually, she was starving, she hadn't eaten since noon. "Yeah," she replied, glad her voice sounded normal again.
"There's got to be a 24 hour diner or something around here." He kept driving, pulling off the freeway when he got a chance. It was only about ten minutes more before they found one and he focused on parking the car. Who knew? He'd be spending the early morning hours with Zoey in some pit hole of a place about an hour away from Owens. Oh well, it wasn't too late to turn back now. Not that he would. The car was parked and Duncan ran a hand wearily over his mohawk.
Zoey looked in-huh, not many people were there. Well not surprising, considering that it was...1:20. Wow, it was getting late. But she knew her mother didn't really mind, after all, she did give her permission to be out late. Was she breaking rules by being out all night? Maybe, maybe not. Honestly, she couldn't care less right now. She was starving. Zoey unbuckled her seatbelt, smiling at Duncan. He was a lot greater than he thought, she hoped he knew that. "Ready?" ...
If Doey were to happen, I would want it to wait until the seventh season because Duncan needs a season to be fucking SINGLE
